Ang mabatong pulong ito sa may bungad ng Manila Bay ay hindi daw maigugupo sang- ayon sa mga Amerikano. Ipinagpatuloy nila ang pagtatanggol sa pulo sa paniniwalang walang katulad ang kabutihan ng mga makabago nilang kagamitan. Ngunit, itinalaga sa loob ng mga Hapones na ito ay maigupo. Halos madaling araw pa lamang noong ika 5 ng Mayo, ay halos walang pagitang patak ng mga bomba at putok ng malalaking kanyon ang bumagsak sa kabatuhang ito, at ang buong kapuluan ay halos nabalutan ng makapal na usok. Noong gabing iyon ay mga batikang kawal ang natitipon sa Limay, Bataan. Sa ganap na ika 10:45 ng gabi, ang mga kanyon sa llkuran ay sandaling nanahimik at ang mga gaba- rang-pangdaung na punong-puno ng mga kawal ay halos 300 metro na lamang ang lapit sa Korregidor. Ang pagdadaung ay naganap! Kinabukasan ay mahigpit na labanan ang naganap, at ang Hukbong Hapones ay nagpatuloy sa kanyang pagdalu- hong. Sa ika 7:00 noong gabing iyon si Heneral Wainwright ay pumunta sa Kabkaben, Bataan, na taglay ang bandilang puti. Sa pa'gka Kataastaasang-Pinuno niya ng USAFFE sa buong Pilipinas ay inlhandog niya ang pagsuko ng Korrehi- dor lamang. Ito ay hindi sinangayunan ng Hukbong Hapones, kayat pabalik niyang binagtas ang salisalimuot na pung- lo patungong Korregidor. Ngunit ang slgla sa labanan ng mga Amerikano ay nanglamig na, kayat noong gabi ding iyon ay itinaas nila ang bandilang puti at sila ay sumuko. T> ATAAN fell but Corregidor resisted surrender. This rocky island in the entrance to Manila Bay was boasted by the Americans as impregnable. They had the best materials of war that science could produce and relying on these modern weapons they were besieged in the tiny Island to keep up their resistance. - The Japanese Forces made up their mind to smash it. On the early morning of May 5 bomb after bomb and salvo after salvo were dumped on the rock. Corregidor was almost enveloped in smoke. That night our crack troops concentrated on Limay, Bataan and, at 10:45 p. m. the firing from the rear stopped. »The invasion barges loaded with troops were already within 300 meters from Corregidor. Finally the Invasion was successfully made. The fierce fighting continued the following day and the Japanese troops kept on advancing. At 7 p. m. that niaht General Wainwright slipped out of Corregidor, came to Cab- caben, Bataan with a white flag and asked for an interview with the Japanese Forces. Wainwright being the Commander- in-Chief of the United States Armed Forces in the Philippines offered only the surrender of Corregidor. The meeting came to a deadlock and he was sent back to Corregidor amidst the bursting of shells. But how could the Americans resist any longer when their fighting spirit was already low? That nigh; they hoisted the white flag and laid down their arms. I

This edition of Japanese propaganda magazine, “Shin Seiki” (text in Tagalog and English), published by the Department of Information, was brought back to America by Carr and Ruth Hooper who were interned at Santo Tomas Internment Camp in Manila, Philippines from January 1942 to February 1945. Hand-written notes made by Carr refer to several photos and captions. The camp, also known as the Manila Internment Camp, was run by the Japanese military during World War II and housed over 3,000 internees from January 1942 until February 1945.
