  • The following letter is from Mrs. John K. Waters, daughter of Lt. General George S. Patton, Jr., and wife of Lt. Colonel John K. Waters, now a prisoner of war in Of lag XXI-B, Germany* Dear Relative of a Prisoner of Warj No one, not in our position, can fully understand our problems and worries, as near relatives of a prisoner of war, whom we love and for whom we long. He is out of the conflict and apparently safe. Yet he is completely separated from us. Now that the worst fear - that of his death in battle - is past, all the minor fears and anxieties are magnified by our imaginations. Is he well-treated? Is he ill, hungry, neglected, unhappy in the dreary surroundings of a prison camp? The sum of these minor worries is sometimes almost harder to bear than the former great anxiety about his life itself. My husband was first reported "Missing". For three weeks I heard nothing more. Then a telegram came from the War Department telling me that my husband was a prisoner in Germany. Shortly after that I received a postcard from my husband himself, telling me of his capture and imprisonment. It is unnecessary to describe my relief. You will understand this. In his first letter and those that followed, he told of what was being done for prisoners in his camp, and mentioned especially the work of the War Prisoners Aid of the Y.M.C.A. I made inquiries, and what I discovered cheered me greatly, and gave me new hope that, when this terrible war is over, my husband will come back, as well, hopeful and capable as ever. I found that the secretaries of War Prisoners Aid of the Y.M.C.A. actuallx.vlsit___ the camps to encourage educational courses, sports and other recreations, vocational training and religious activity, and to discover ■what the men need for these. The necessary supplies are then shipped from one of their centers. In this way, they serve men in prison oamps in almost every part of the world. These vast and varied services and supplies provided by the War Prisoners Aid of the Y.M.C.A., in addition to the eleven-pound, weekly food packages and the extra clothing and medical supplies, provided by the American Red Cross and distributed to American prisoners by the international Red Cross, give us every reason to believe that our men are neither hopeless nor neglected, I learned also that the War Prisoners Aid of the Y.M.C.A. serves the prisoner private with the same devotion and concern as it would a captured general. These facts made me want to share with this organization, those parts of my husband^ letters which mention the Y.M.C.A. fs work for war prisoners. So I copied such passages and mailed them to War Prisoners Aid of the Y.M.C.A., 347 Madison Avenue, New York (17), N. Y. I know that if you, too, oan do this, they will appreciate it. In this way, you may even give them additional guidance in their service to our men. And now, before I close, may I venture another suggestion. Cheerful letters from home mean everything to a prisoner. No matter how much we may feel like complaining, remember that he can do nothing about it. An unhappy letter may depress him for hours or days, while a cheerful word from home will sustain him. It will give him courage to bear the, at best, depressing life of a prisoner, and to look forward with hope and assurance to reunion with those he loves.
