City Attorney Frank Healey returned to bis office to-day after a month of recuperation in the woods at Leech Lake. He found this an admirable place for a tired man. aud gained an average of two pounds a week for all the time he was there. Mr. Healey returns a thorough convert to the proposed scheme of forestry reservation for that country. Only he regards the plan advocated by Colonel Cooper as somewhat toofcoroprehenslve. It would he a mistake, ho thinks, to include in such a reserve any of the good agricultural land iu that section. There is enough land totally without value other than for tliu- por purposes, he holds. Separate tracts here and there through that country, where the conditions are favorable, with efficient protection from fire and spoliation by the timber thieves to his mind is the thing wanted. Around Walker there were immense tracts of this kind of country. It is absolutely good for nothing except the growing of pine timber. When the present standing timber is cut,—and he Is informed that it won't be long before It will be,—nothing will remain but a desert, and when that time comes there will be nothing for the oeople of Walker to do but pull up stakes and move away. The permanence of that thriving little town, he holds, depends wholly upon the preservation of the forests contiguous to it. Many of the citizens of the town, he found, were waiting up to the realization of this fact, and are becoming stanch vl- vocates of the forestry reserve proposition. Nearly the whole of the lands contaiued in the Leech Lake reservation, he says, is of the useless sort described above, fitted to grow pine and nothing else, and coul.l very properly be Included in the proposed national park. LOOKING OVER THE DALLES The Wisconsin Interstate Park Men Visit Taylors Falls. Special to The Journal. Taylors Falls, Minn., Sept. 27.—Representative L. B. Dresser of St. Croix Falls and George H. Hazzard, commissioner interstate park of the Dalles of the St. Croix, went to the twin cities yesterday and met W. G. Wheeler and wife aud C. S. Jackson and wife of Jamesvllle, Wis., and accompanied them to this place last evening. Mr. Wheeler Is a commissioner to acquire the 600 acres of park lands on the Wisconsin side. He is a lawyer, and acted as chairman of the judiciary committee of the assembly last winter. The party is delighted with the St. Croix valley, and Mr. Wheeler has been a warm friend of the park measure from the first. The Duluth railway is putting in the stone piers for the new steel bridges that are to take the place of the old wooden ones across the ravines approaching town.

This 37-page scrapbook was put together by A. H. McQuilkin, a Chicago-based editor who moved to Asheville, North Carolina in the mid-1890s. The scrapbook starts out with an article from one of McQulkin’s own publications, “Southern Pictures and Pencillings,” but also includes clippings from other sources including the “Asheville Citizen.” Most of the clippings date to 1899. McQuilkin and Ambler were founding members of the Appalachian National Park Association, which promoted the idea of a national park in the southern Appalachians. The association disbanded in 1905. The frontispiece of the book is inscribed “Per C. P. Ambler/1929,” the date Ambler donated the material to the State Archives.
