Many bridges on these Southern mountain streams, even when built on successively higher piers, have been washed away several times by floods during the past few years. (II) PUBLIC ROAD RUINED BY FLOODS, MITCHELL COUNTY, N. C. The clearing of the mountain slopes and the destruction of humus mid undergrowth by forest fires cause the water rrom heavy rains to rush down the mountain sides on the public roads, and to wash the latter away. ine damages to the public highways in the mountain counties of western North Carolina from this cause uuring the past few years are estimated to have reached several million dollars.
