  • ROCKEFELLER AGREEMENT COPY January 26, 1934 The Chase National Bank of the City of New York Equitable Trust Branch 11 Broad Street New York City Gentlemen: Our predecessor, the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial, wrote to your predecessor, The Equitable Trust Company of New York, a letter dated March 30, 1928, transmitting to you the sum of $5,000,000 to be held and distributed in accordance with the instructions set forth in the letter. These instructions have been modified by supplemental letters dated April 5, 1928, September 10, 1928, June 27, 1930, December 29, 1930, December 21, 1931, January 10, 1933, and November 1, 1933. Under date of January 19, 1934, the Executive Committee of The Rockefeller Foundation extended the appropriation of the former Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial, LS 914, to December 31, 1934, and in addition took the following action: RESOLVED that the officers be, and they hereby are, authorized to amend the letter of the former Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial, dated March 30, 1928, subject to the informal approval of the Board of Trustees, so as to provide for the unconditional payment upon requisition of the Trustees of the Great Smoky Mountains Memorial Fund of the balance remaining under Appropriation LS 914,of the former Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial. Hunter Library You are hereby instructed to pay the balance of approximately $500,000 remaining in the fund to the Trustees of the Great Smoky Mountains Memorial Fund upon their notification that the said balance or any part or parts thereof is required for the purchase of land for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, no payments to be made, however, after December 31, 1934, and any balance remaining in the Fund after December 31, 1934, to lapse and revert to the Foundation. It is understood that all other conditions set forth in said letter of March 30, 1928, as heretofore modified as aforesaid, are unchanged; and also that before making any further payments out of said fund you shall receive a copy or copies of this letter with signed consents in the form subjoined, believed by you to be genuine and to have been signed by the proper parties. If this is satisfactory to you, will you kindly write to us that you will continue to hold and disburse this fund on the terms and conditions above expressed?   • This North Carolina Park Commission Report was completed at the close of 1939 and submitted to North Carolina Governor Clyde R. Hoey. The 62-page publication, compiled for the Commission by Albert H. Blake, begins with a letter to the governor reporting that all of the land on the North Carolina side of the park has been purchased and conveyed to the federal government. The report includes an auditor’s report, information about the Rockefeller fund, and a copy of the 1927 law that brought the commission into being. The report includes lists tracts of land, family names, and values paid for purchase. W.W. Neal was chairman of the commission at the time and G.F. Hankins was secretary.
