  • Report of the North Carolina Park Commission 7 On February 6, 1930, the Governor representing the State, delivered to the Secretary of the Interior a deed to the 58,622.58 acres. The Tennessee Commission at the same time presented a similar area. The Department of the Interior then took over this territory donated to it, and took steps to protect the forests, lay out plans for the development of the park, and to be ready for large developments as soon as the minimum area is donated. The Commission has been careful to see that the funds have been wisely spent and properly safeguarded. It wishes to commend Mr. Rhoades and his staff for the skill displayed in determining land values, and in securing options. The report shows that in June, 1930, the funds deposited were adequately covered by indemnity bonds, State, Federal or municipal bonds. By resolution of the Commission the Central Bank and Trust Company of Asheville was named as one of the depositories of the park funds. This bank failed to open its doors November 20, 1930. The condition of the park funds in that bank and others is set forth in a report to the Commission by W. E. Stevens, C. P. A., as follows: NORTH CAROLINA PARK COMMISSION Asheville, North Carolina FUNDS AVAILABLE January 10, 1931 State Funds 1. Due from State of North Carolina $1,136,490.56 2. Cash in Central Bk. & Tr.
