October 18-19 THUNDERHEAD* By leaving Knoxville at two-thirty Saturday afternoon we can easily drive up to Cades Cove by dark. From Kinzel Springs we cross the river and railroad and turn to the right and follow up through Tuckaleechee Cove to Uncle Billy Lawson's picturesque little store where the winding grade starts across Rich Mountain. From the top, a majestic view of Tuckaleechee stretches down to Chilhowee Mountain and far beyond. As we come around the shoulder of the south side of Rich Mountain to begin the descent, a delightful view of Cades Cove, encircled by mountains on all sides, spreads before us. The cultivated fields and patches of woods look like a patch-work quilt—the old rail fences in the distance reminding one of Grandmother's quilting stitches. Down in the Cove, we stop at the little camp operated by the Cove mailman, for the night. Or, of course, if the weather is clear and moderate, those who like may hike on up to the little apple orchard and there camp out for the night, at the foot of the trail. From down in the Cove the Russel Field on top of the Smoky range is visible only as a pale, naked saddle which may be differentiated from the dark wooded portions. The ascent to the Russel Field begins at the little abandoned apple orchard up near the head of the Cove, and follows a rushing little stream which empties into Abram's Creek. About two miles up this steep trail we leave the creek to come out on top of a little ridge leading into the Russel Field, about a mile away. Russel Field is a beautiful rolling, grassy expanse of several hundred acres nestling in the depression where two ridges join. A little stream flows down through the place and two ramshackle cabins and a dilapidated barn are on the place. Leaving the Russel Field, with its laurel-bound "While this is a very fine hike, it is a hard one. Another hike, an easy one-day trip, is scheduled for this same weekend. Take your choice. 55

In 1926, the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club began to print an annual handbook that outlined scheduled hikes for each month of the year, including winter. This 1930 handbook was collected by George Masa (1881-1933), a photographer active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Smoky Mountains Hiking Club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Enjoying the spectacular views, the group returned to establish a formal hiking club to sponsor regularly-scheduled hikes into the Great Smoky Mountains.
