OLD SMOKY (Continued from page 324) and bred such outstanding patriots as Boone, Sevier, General Williamson and the great James Moore, who was South Carolina's first colonial governor. Swift flying detachments of backwoods riflemen from Virginia, Tennessee, the Carolinas and Georgia made short work of the Indian after the decision was made that he had to go. With no foreign ally at his ready command he was trapped like a hounded wolf at bay, snapping viciously at his foes. So deep did the razor edge of hate cut in the Carolinas that in 1838, President Jackson was led to banish his former allies— the Cherokees—to the Indian Territory. Thousands of them were deported, but a small remnant fled to the caves of their beloved Smokies. Smoke of their burning villages filled the gorges. Through the diplomacy of their adopted white chief, William H. Thomas ("Little Will", as he was affectionately called), twelve hundred were allowed to remain in North Carolina without government support. To this nucleus at Cherokee, N. C. we owe the credit for the last bit of colonial color left with us. Just preceding—and after—the Indian exodus, Great Smoky territory began to be over-run with real estate agents and squatters from New England and abroad. Even Daniel Boone assisted in the hegira. The dominating Anglo-Saxon who once rudely brushed aside his red brother as "a cum- berer of the ground" laid aside his deerskin doublet and scalping knife and applied himself to the more peaceful profits of husbandry. His unerring rifle continued to supply meat for his table from the teeming game of the forests. Several articles on the Carolinas appear in this 1931 issue of Nature Magazine. The magazine was collected by George Masa. Born Masahara Iizuka and raised in Japan, George Masa (1881-1933) emigrated to the U.S. when he was 20 years old and, in 1915, came to Asheville, where he lived the rest of his life. Masa was active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
