  • LS But I want to say to you that the State of toeorgia has a vital interest in the establishment of thi3 park. I do not suppose there is more interest in Asheville or in the State of North Carolina than there is in my own home on the southern sea-board. The State of beorgia has a large mountain section which might well do for a great national park, but as dearly as we love our State and as proudly as we feel of our section, we gladly and gracefully yield the primacy to North Carolina. Why, in my own home in Savannah there are possibly a hundred people who own property in and around Asheville. These people are not only selfishly interested in the establishment of this park for their own good, but they are intere* ed in a more general way in the preservation of the forests and in the enhancement of your city and section as a pleasure and health resort. I can almost remember myself when the southern portion of North Carolina was the richest and wealthiest part of the south in Under naval stores. ,/hat is it today? the unintelligent application of the axe what has become of those nob-e forests of pine which once gave you your preeminence in ail naval stores? To-day it is in Savannah. Tomorrow it may be in Mobile or Jackson or New Orleans. Like North Carolina, Georgia and South Carolina have suffered from the same cause. And ai- this necause of a ruthless search for Traitfe A The axraan has been allowed to strip your forests of their richness ~~iA~* and a**i robbed your Slate of a great part of its wealth.
