This memoir by Imogene Herron Nielsen, known later in life as Gene Nielsen, describes her experiences at Western Carolina Teachers College while she was a student there from 1931-33. Nielsen ends her memoir by stating how her experiences at Western shaped her later life including her decision to be involved in politics, and getting married to a college professor.

MEMORIES OF WESTERN CAROLINA TEACHERS COLLEGE 1931-1933 I arrived at WCTC on my nineteenth birthday, ready to enroll as a junior, with $50 to pay down on room and board. My father had driven me over from Asheville. We had talked to Miss Posey during the summer and knew to go to Moore Dormitory and find her. Miss Posey (really Mrs. Posey) was my father's "sweetheart", he told me, when he was eight years old and she was twelve. He had tried to get her to promise to wait for him, but she had not waited and he had married my mother, but he had always kept up with Miss Posey's whereabouts. Miss Posey was a beautifully plump, well-dressed Dean of Women and I had loved her at first sight (that previous summer). She welcomed us affectionally and took me up to a lovely room on the second floor of Moore. I went at once to the window and looked out at the mountains. During the next two years I often leaned on that window sill, head in my hands, looking at the mountains and dreaming of what was to come in my life. Dad helped me get the small desk he had made for me up to my room, said goodbye, and I was left alone to unpack my few clothes. Then I went to find the English Department. I knew I was going to be an English major and I had to get a job. I found Mr. Bird,then head of the department, who was happy to see me and very friendly. He got out his copy of my transcript from Junior College and said of course he could put me to work in the department, that I was not
