  • This memoir by Imogene Herron Nielsen, known later in life as Gene Nielsen, describes her experiences at Western Carolina Teachers College while she was a student there from 1931-33. Nielsen ends her memoir by stating how her experiences at Western shaped her later life including her decision to be involved in politics, and getting married to a college professor.
  • I have already mentioned how much I worshipped Mr. Elliott, and I should add that Mr. Bird was also an excellent teacher as was Mr. Stillwell. In junior college history had put me to sleep, but Mr. Stillwell made history exciting and important. I think my classes in government and American History with Mr. Stillwell whetted my appetite for politics and sent me as an adult into The League of Women Voters, the United Nations Association, and the World Federalist Association, as well as into party politics. And another great teacher was Professor Madison. He always had time to consult with the students about whatever was on their minds. I remember that it was the influence of these four men that caused me to decide that I was going to marry a college professor. From that time on I measured every possible mate against my romanticized memories of especially Mr. Elliott, and when I was a graduate student at the University of California, I met such a man. He was a graduate student studying for his Ph.D. in Physics, planning to be a college professor. He was brilliant but since I had made A's in Physics, I was not afraid to talk with him. Also he wrote beautiful love poems for me and had studied literature and philosophy. We have been married 48 years, have three grown successful children and four beautiful grandchildren, and my husband is still a college professor, at home now writing a book about solar energy. We have traveled over much of the world, lecturing and meeting fascinating people. We have lived in India, England, Switzerland, and Germany, and spent
