and educational. I remember that a few times I hitchhiked with a male student to Asheville — that was really rarely done by girls back in those days. You can be sure that I didn't tell Miss Posey how I got to Asheville! On one of my trips there I bought two bottles of Three Point Two beer when my parents weren't around — it had just become legal. I hid it in my luggage. My date's first question when I got back was "Did you get the 3.8?" I assured him that I had it. We walked sedately to the gym, quickly disappeared behind it, and I opened the lunch sack containing the beer. My boyfriend thought it was great that I had remembered to get an opener. But the beer was a dismal failure. It was lukewarm and tasted terrible to both of us. It took me years to learn to enjoy the taste of good beer even in Germany. Another special memory deals with the dining room at Moore. Then we were assigned a table for eight or ten, I can't remember which it was, and a teacher was the hostess. I remember how friendly and intelligent Mrs. Buchanan was and how much I admired her. She always kept an interesting, lively conversation going. The only student I remember who sat at my table was Richard Miller, who was also a debater. Teenagers were always hungry then too, but the college had a great way to fill us up. If we were still hungry after lunch and dinner, we could serve ourselves as much bread and butter and molasses as we wanted. It seemed to me that everybody liked that.
