This memoir by Imogene Herron Nielsen, known later in life as Gene Nielsen, describes her experiences at Western Carolina Teachers College while she was a student there from 1931-33. Nielsen ends her memoir by stating how her experiences at Western shaped her later life including her decision to be involved in politics, and getting married to a college professor.

humorous in a kind way, knew the literature he was teaching. He made provocative remarks to the class. For example, "I wouldn't advise you to read Rabelais. Most of you are too young. His writing is pretty racey." There was immediately a run on the library copy of Rabelais. I still remember the first few lines of Chaucer and many of his stories, and I read all of Shakespeare under the guidance of Mr. Elliott, and even now when I attend a performance of a Shakespeare play or opera (just saw Verdi's Macbeth two weeks ago), I often think of how Mr. Elliott read it. When Mr. Bird told me that my job in the English Department would be to grade papers for Mr. Elliott, I was ecstatic. However, I was also concerned that no student should know that I was the paper grader for the English Department. I asked Mr. Bird and Mr. Elliott not to let the students know. They thought I would not be able to keep it secret because of my roommate. I talked to Miss Posey and was given permission to grade papers in the Student Council room after hours. She gave me a key and I left my stack of papers there when no one was around, did my homework during the day or in the evening, and at 10:00 when everyone was supposed to be in her room, I went to the Council Room and graded papers. I remember those nights. Often I was there until two or three o'clock — and one time I remember I got to bed at 4:00 a.m. and played a tennis match at 7:00 a.m. That time I was not disappointed to be runner-up...My roommate was much concerned that I often disappeared after 10:00 and warned me that she would have to report me.
