TRACTS 307 and 307a - CM. MOODY THE TITLE The original tracts out of which these two little parcels originally came is embraced wholly within the bounds of State Grant No. 252, issued to John Gray Blount on November 29th, 1796. Title to the lands covered by this grant became vested in Robert Love and James R. Love under a deed bearing date December 20, 1834, and became a part of what is generally known as the Love Speculation Lands. The records disclose a regular recorded chain of title to these lands under the above named grant to the present owner, C. M. Moody. In addition thereto the said C. M. Moody and those under whom he claims have been in the long, open, adverse possession of these lands for a sufficient period of time to mature title under the statutes of North Carolina. However, these tracts are lapped by a junior deed under which the Suncrest Lumber Company now holds. In order to clarify the situation relative to this lappage all persons necessary were made parties in a condemnation proceeding, brought in the Superior Court of Buncombe County, before the Clerk, entitled, "State of North Carolina vs. Suncrest Lumber Company, et al,* and will be concluded by final judgment. When suitable action is taken relative to this lappage due note of the same will be made in this abstract. Inquiry in the neighborhood discloses that no other person, except the Suncrest Lumber Company, has set up claim of any nature to these lands. There are no valid outstanding liens or encumbrances. All deeds are general warranty deeds, and purport to convey the title in fee simple. All taxes have been paid.

This land title relates to tract 307 in Cataloochee. These documents are in the Love Family Papers in the archives of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Members of the Love family were prominent land holders in western North Carolina. Thomas Love (1765-1844), was a politician and land speculator whose holdings exceeded 6,000 acres of land, some of which would be purchased for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. His older brother, Robert Love (1760-1845) was a Revolutionary War veteran, surveyor, businessman and considered to be the founder of Waynesville.
