  • "Teacher" was only seventeen 29 You could not blame him. He had been brought up in this very school. At the close of the afternoon, roll was called. All were sure to be present by that time, I suppose. There were ninety-two children in that one-room school. There were but five different surnames and fourteen different families. Docy was absent again. Last week "teacher" had told her she must clean up the floor. Docy had been spitting again. Docy's "mam" said her child should stay home before she should clean up the floor. That was one place where "teacher" was going too far. Last year both teachers had been wont to spit as freely as any one, and now to stop it altogether! That was moving along too fast. I wondered how long "teacher" could hold out. In all else the parents supported her and declared she was the "cleverest" teacher up that creek yet. I walked home with "teacher" and a group of girls. All the girls invited me home to stop all night, but I declined. I wanted to ramble a bit further with "teacher." She was only seventeen but I had much to learn of her. The Little Old Mule
