Waynesville is a thriving city on the chief route of tourist travel to the Smokies On the accompanying map an effort has been made to show the position of these cities with reference to the park itself. Only a few of the highest mountains have been noted. The park is an endless phalanx of towering mountains and deep valleys. Merely the line of most important peaks along the main divide have been portrayed. It is difficult to visualize a very important fact from seemingly meaningless figures. In actual mileage, however, Bryson City, the chief city on the very border of the park, is from Boston 1,284 miles Buffalo 1,004 " Chicago _ __ 853 " Cincinnati 500 miles Cleveland 763 " Detroit 810 " Jacksonville 615 " Memphis 724 " Miami 1,008 " New Orleans 862 " New York 877 " Philadelphia 780 " Richmond 506 " Savannah 394 " St. Louis 784 " Tampa 787 " Washington 690 " These figures show the central location and the easy accessibility of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

“The Great Smokies” is a 27-page brochure published by the North Carolina National Park Commission, also known as the North Carolina Park Commission. The brochure features two essays, “The Last of the Eastern Wilderness,” by Horace Kephart (1862-1931) and a shorter statement titled, “Secretary of the Interior” by Hubert Work who served as Secretary from 1923 until 1928. Kephart’s essay, previously published in “The World’s Work” in April 1926, distinguishes between the Smokies and the Blue Ridge. He writes in anticipation of the establishment of two new national parks, Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina and Tennessee.
