  • In this letter of January 19, 1863, J.W. Killian writes to Joseph Cathey to report that he has arrived home from visiting a North Carolina regiment of the Confederate Army near Fredericksburg. He reports that he found the soldiers in better condition and in better spirits than he expected, and he gives some information on Confederate troop movements. He also informs Cathey that Captain James Cathey and some of his men have sent money home and instructed Cathey to have an agent distribute according to instructions that Killian has in his possession.
