  • Mosley 1 WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA TOMORROW BLACK ORAL HISTORY PROJECT Interviewee: Emma Mosley (M) Interviewer: Lorraine Crittenden (I) County: Swain Date: April 23, 1986 Length: 1:34:01 Introduction: Mrs. Emma Mosley is a very spry lady who is 76 years old. She is very thin which evoked the question, "How have you stayed so strong?" She answered by saying, "Hard work." She still cuts/splits wood for her stove today as well as plants and harvest a quite sizeable garden. She was very candid as she answered my questions and was able to supply details which lent authenticity as she recalled the history of her family. Her life was filled with hard, back-aching work such as "snaking" wood for her father. All of the children had to work on the farm before and after school; there was little time for play or socializing with other children outside of her family. Her family was isolated from other members of the black community because of where they lived. Later, the family moved into town; yet,
