"And then Jim started. Easy! That was the word that was urging him on" and sign up. I tell you it isn't often we get a chance to grab the easy money!" "It is easy." "Sure! Easy as can be!" Then Jim started. Easy! That word was what was urging him on! It was the lure of something easy! And as he stood there, he saw in a flash the cause of all his troubles. The lure of the easy—that was what he'd sought all his life! That was what his father had sought! The easy way! He had taken it, always! In Andiver, it had been because it was easy, pleasant and easy, he had gone with Sam Buchanan. In the hills, it was because it was easy, he had drifted, trapped and fished. Easy—no striving necessary! And the easy way was not the way to—success! "What'sbothering you," O'Shay said, holding out a pen. "You look as if you were seeing things!" Jim was. He was seeing clearly what had been the matter with his life. He had drifted, had always taken the easy way. And invariably the easy way was not the way to final success. The easy way! This time he'd take the hard! And so the paper before him, he shoved the pen aside. "No, I guess not!" O'Shay did have a temper. "Guess not—after promising me, you might say! Guess not!" Then, "What's the matter? Want a bigger rake off? I'm giving you the usual percentage now, boy, but, seeing you have got a name, I'll increase it!" "No. It isn't that." "Isn't that!" "No," Jim could not then put his feeling into words. "No, only I guess I'll not go into it." "Maybe you think I'm a crook," O'Shay's face became red. "Is that it? Why, you hill billy—" And then O'Shay's face became white. He was no coward, but five feet two isn't six feet one, and fifty- seven isn't nineteen. But Jim Castle laughed. He laughed and continued to laugh. O'Shay didn't know it then, Jim was laughing not at him, but at everything that had pulled him down. He had blamed the hills, the rough environment in which he was raised; he had blamed Sam Buchanan—and all the time his one enemy had been himself! So Jim laughed though he did soothe O'Shay. "It isn't you I'm laughing at," he said. "It's myself!" O'Shay didn't fully understand even when Jim tried to explain. One could tell that by his puzzled expression. But he did see Jim was in earnest. "And so you'd rather go on—working nights— studying day times, and hoping for the future?" "That's it," Jim nodded. "That's it! The future! The hard road is the road that leads to success, or," doubtfully, a boyish grin on his face, "or at least I've found the easy road doesn't. But we'll let it go at that." O'Shay nodded. "I'd like to have signed you," he said simply. "It's easy money!" Jim didn't thrill. [ Continued on page IS i 3]

This article titled, “An Indian Fair” was written by Paul Fink and published in The High Road in 1931. The article appears on pages 7, 8, 9, and 14. The narrative begins with a brief history of the Cherokee people and concludes with a description of the annual Cherokee Indian Fair. Paul M. Fink (1892-1980), a hiker and advocate of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, served on the Tennessee Nomenclature Committee. Working with George Masa and others, he was largely responsible for routing the Appalachian Trail through the Great Smokies and nearby mountain ranges.
