  • page 4 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Monday, May 28, 1973 Faculty Salaries storm D°ma9e a May 9 letter to vice chancellor for academic affairs J. Stuart Wilson. The matter was referred to UNC President William Friday's office, and subsequently, advice was sought from the state attorney general's office. Assistant attorney general Andrew A. Venore Jr. advised Friday's office that the information was a matter of public record. Dr. Richard Robinson, administrative assistant to President Friday, told the Charlotte Observer that there was "a long-standing tradition with and among faculty that material from their personnel files would not be disclosed to the general public." Robinson said that the salary disclosure was apparently unprecedented among the 16 member institutions of The University of North Carolina. Salary averages by depart ment and rank were released earlier this year at UNC-Char- lotte in response to a request from the editor of The Journal, the student newspaper, but no names were given with the salary figures. Grant had earlier said that release of the figures would reveal "gross inequities" in salaries paid men and women. He told the Western Carolinian last night that "reports are trickling into me" that salary figures in the budget document are incorrect. The AFT distributed copies of the salary document to its members Friday. Grant suggested that the complaints may indicate a larger amount of error in the document than has been reported to him. The English professor also noted that figures in the document apparently reveal that part of WCU head football coach and athletic director Bob . . ... FROM Page 1 Waters' salary is paid from money allocated to the department of modern foreign languages. A hand-written notation dated July 1, 1972 lists $625.0C being taken from a position assigned to German teacher Gari Muller and transferred to Waters' position in the department. It says:$625 used for Bob Waters, Pos. # 1627." Waters' position number is 1627, and he currently makes $21,000 per year, a $1,500 increase over last year. A vacant but nevertheless funded position in the foreign languages department is apparently used to pay the salary of history professor Harold T. Blethen, Grant said. Any graduating senior who is opposed to the policies of the 1972-73 WCU administration is urged to meet in McKee 118, Tuesday, May 29 at 7:00 p.m. Heavy rains engulfed Cullowhee last night, causing severe road and bridge damage. Graham Infirmary, however, reported no injuries that were related to the thunder storm. Minor arteries to Cullowhee were severed, as three bridges were washed out and two more submerged. Bridges on Long Branch road, Camp Lab road, and Forest Hills road were destroyed while the Speedwell Road bridge was covered with four feet of water. The bridge below the Village Store leading to Battle Trailer Park was also awash. Reports from the Jackson County Rescue Squad early this morning Indicated that both of these bridges could wash away. Shortly after 11:00 p.m. the WCU Volunteer Fire Dept, was called to the old rest home near the Delta Sigma Phi house. A small bridge crossing Cullowhee Creek leading to the house had been washed out and the firemen could only stand by and helplessly watch the 32 room house burn to the ground. Estimates of property damage were unavailable at press time. Tenure Recommendations .... FROM Page 1 policy they would now receive terminal contracts, though he had not received any definite decision. Dr. John Bergner, dean of the school of health sciences and services, submitted no tenure recommendations tothead- ministration this year. Dr. Taft B. Botner, dean of the school of education and psychology, did not have the figures with him yesterday and "could not recall" the exact number of his recommendations that were approved, David Hume Instr. 9,744 492 10,236 Jack G.
