Friday, October the 9th, the sixth and seventh grades gave a program before the school on the same subject. Johnnie Franklin and Carl Wilson out for a Sunday afternoon ride The death of Rossie Gourley, a pupil in the. sixth grade who was accidentally killed on the morning of October 11th, came as a shock to her playmates and to the community. We extend our deepest sympathy to her bereaved relatives. Mrs. Bynum, who has been the efficient manager of the Hazel Creek Hotel for the past several months, has left Proctor for Asheville, North Carolina, where she is spending the winter. Mr. E. E. Ritter was a recent visitor here. Mr. Stanley, our payroll man, has moved into the house vacated by Mr. Culbertson, who is now manager of the boarding house. Messrs. E. B.' McCollum, Jack Bryant, Verne Bateman, Ray Swan, Carl Wilson, Howard Bateman, and Arthur Storie, enjoyed a bear hunt on Smoky Mountains, starting October 26th. Mr. and Mrs. Dock Hall are the proud parents of a baby girl, born on October 25th. A Poor Risk "You had better let me write that insurance for you, Sam," said the insurance agent to one of the negro lumber stackers. "No, sir," replied Sam, emphatically. "I ain't none too safe at home as it is." Colleton In the October issue of the "Bark" Colleton did not have any news items which must have been caused by the fact that the reporters had not fully recovered from the shock of the loss of the saw mill by fire. However, as the work of rebuilding is progressing so rapidly, we are all counting the days when we shall again rejoice over the buzzing of the saws. The patrons of the Colleton school have purchased a Ford bus to transport the children from the fifth grade to Smoaks. Eight of the pupils are doing high school work. Miss Dora Lee Linder of Mt. Car- mel is teaching the primary grades here. Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Tennill and family are on a hunting and fishing trip on the Florida coast. Mrs. C. N. Wynne and her mother, Mrs. Russell, were called to North Carolina on account of the death of Mrs. Russell's grandson. Their friends in Colleton extend sympathy. Miss Eloise Armstrong of North Carolina has entered the Smoaks High School and is living with her aunt, Mrs. C. N. Wynne. Miss Leona Linder of Mt. Carmel, and Clinton Medford, son of Rev. A. T. Medford, Pond Man at Hazel Creek. Clinton is attending school at Bryson City. He is sixteen years old and stands six feet and two inches high Holland and Ronald, sons of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Jordan. Miss Sarah Brabham of Williams are boarding pupils who are attending the same school. Messrs. Brass, Manning, Scott, and Carlton, motored to Columbia, October 19th to attend the Shrine ceremonial. Among our recent business visitors here were Messrs. C. B. Weakley, A. W. Agee, E. E. Ritter and Mr. Bray. Mr. R. W. Adams, Manager of the Club House, has promised a big turkey dinner on Thanksgiving day if the mill is operating. Of course, Mr. Snidow is putting forth every effort and he hopes to have the mill in operation not later than the 15th of November. Messrs. E. E. Ritter and J. 0. Weeks spent several days in North Carolina investigating timber. Either of these gentlemen can give information as to the best place for hunting wild ducks and wild geese. We regret the death of Mrs. Redish, mother of Mr. J. C. Redish, who was in her eighty-fifth year. Mr. Redish, who is sixty-five years of age, states that never at one time during his entire life, did he spend a full week away from his mother. Kenneth Hall and James Carter, who had the misfortune of badly burning their feet by stepping in hot ashes, are both getting along nicely. City Cousin: "Why do you paint the inside of your chicken coop?" Farmer: "To keep the hens from picking the grain out of the wood." Fifteen

“The Hardwood Bark” was a publication produced “for the employees of the W.M Ritter Lumber Co.” William McClellan Ritter (1864-1952) organized the company in 1901 and, from 1903 until 1926, the company operated on Hazel Creek in Swain County, North Carolina, before moving its operations to Nantahala. Published during the 1920s, the monthly newsletter typically ran to about 25 pages. “The Hardwood Bark” was filled with articles on the Ritter company and the timber industry, but also included local stories. The pages included in this collection were selected because they relate to communities within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The town of Ritter was near the junction of Hazel Creek and the Little Tennessee River; a sawmill was built at Proctor, about four miles north of Ritter. The town of Ritter has long since been abandoned and Proctor is beneath the waters of Fontana Lake.
