  • JULY 29 DEFEAT RIDGE AND WEST PRONG A morning drive up Little River, a pleasant hike through midsummer foliage and then, in the heat of the day, a cooling splashing swim! The drive you have made many times; the hike starts behind a group of garages a short distance below Camp Margaret Townsend, Girl Scout Camp, on the Middle Prong of Little River. The trail leads west for a distance through open fields and on, almost a mile, to the first top of Defeat Ridge. Between the first and second "tops" are attractive coves of young timber. A half mile beyond is the West Prong, down which an old railroad grade runs for the three or four intervening miles to the intersection of the West and Middle Prongs. About one hundred yards beyond is the confluence with Little River, and back we are on the highway, about three miles below our starting point. When do we swim ? All the way down West Prong, if you wish. The old railway bridges are gone and while the stream will not be hard to cross, why not change our rock hopping for a cool hop, skip and splash, perhaps bringing a pair of 'specially old shoes for the occasion. All this region was cut over about thirty-years ago and is growing back luxuriantly. What with an easy grade, beautiful young forest, splashing river, this section, new to many club members, is particularly attractive for a short hike. Leave Dixie System at 7:30 A. M. with canteen and food for one meal. Driving distance, 80 miles round trip; hiking distance, a 6 or 8 mile circle. And don't forget the bathing suits!
