  • SUMMER J JULY 1934 HIKE SUPERVISOR—H. R. DUNCAN JULY 14 and 15 HAW KNOB Haw Knob is one of the outstanding peaks of the Smoky Mountains. It is located on the state line of Tennessee and North Carolina, in the Cherokee National Forest. The altitude of Haw Knob is nearly 6000 feet. The top is semi-bald, the plant life consisting of a few trees, small bushes, and grass. During the Civil War a group of men, neutral in sentiment and disinclined to fight, went back into the Smoky Mountains in order not to be molested by the armies of either side. They made Haw Knob their headquarters due to its inaccessibility and the abundance of wild game to be found there, such as bear, deer, turkey, coons, squirrels, and others, which assured food and clothing for winter. These men were members of an old political party known as Whigs, who were very powerful in the early days of the country but were later absorbed by the present parties. Today, the camp site that these men used is still in existence, and the log cabin now standing on it is known as the Whig cabin —the original cabin was burned. There are 30
