  • south on into Georgia, the Blue Ridge lives up to its name and disappears in a blue haze. Glancing over the vast Nantahala forest and the rearing knoll of Wayah Bald, we are likely to get homesick as we watch the sun setting just beyond our beloved Smokies. Only Clingman's Dome raises its head into more light. Directly below, a sheer 1000 foot drop, lies Horse Cove with its winding road which, from above, looks like a trail. To the left we see the beautiful old summer resort, High Hampton, with its silvery lake. Leaving Dixie System at 12:30 Saturday, we take the scenic route over Newfound Gap, past Cherokee, Bryson City and Franklin, and up a mountain gorge to Highlands. For those who camp out Saturday night, bring two blankets and an extra sweater, cooking utensils and food for three meals. Those who wish can stay at a moderately priced hotel. Round trip driving distance, 290 miles. Leaders: CHARLIE GIBSON (3-3210) ELIZABETH HOUSTON (3-5027) WHO KNOWS A MOUNTAIN? One who has gone To worship its beauty In the dawn; One who has slept On its breast at night; One who has measured His strength to its height : One who has followed lis longest trail . I ml laughed in the face Of its fiercest gale: One who has sealed its peak And has trod lis cloud-swept summits Alone with God. —Ethel Romig Fuller 27
