those thinking about going should come in and look it over. This will be an opportunity to get the benefit of your experience as well as to get the gang together to plan the trip and the food to be taken. By planning together many duplications in equipment and food can be eliminated. Properly planned, this Hike can be the most pleasant we have ever taken although this "get together" business ahead of time is quite essential. It can almost be a leisurely camping trip with time to really enjoy nature in its wildest yet kindest phases. It may be a chance to improve your camp lore and wild life lore and many will be the tale swapped at the camp fire. Also take along your best book on "Repartee" for you'll need it even if you do your full share of the "chores" around camp—Better take three or four books if you hope to get by with less than your share! But you'll enjoy it if your conscience is 0. K. Let us warn you that if you take more 'conveniences" than you can carry it's your back that will ache; also if you don't take what you need it's up to you to suffer. Our plan is to purchase all food stuff together, then divide its weight equally for carrying. The weight of your equipment will be your own affair except that the weight of food and necessary equipment that all use will be proportioned equally among all. From the esthetic angle the editor has informed us we may not say much, for we could write a whole booklet like this one without covering the subject. But let us give you a sketchy idea of the territory. From Greenbriar to Eagle Rocks Creek we are reminded of such poetry as "This ]s the Forest Primeval—the murmuring Pines and the Hemlocks" although toward the top that Poetry should say something about Balsams, Rhododendron and Laurel. Some wonderful views similar if not more spectacular than that from the Jump-Off may be seen from Eagle

In 1926, the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club began to print an annual handbook that outlined scheduled hikes for each month of the year, including winter. This 1933 handbook was collected by George Masa (1881-1933), a photographer active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Smoky Mountains Hiking Club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Enjoying the spectacular views, the group returned to establish a formal hiking club to sponsor regularly-scheduled hikes into the Great Smoky Mountains.
