APRIL 8 and 9 LE CONTE, BY ROCKY SPUR AND ROARIN' FORK Of all the hikes in the Smokies with their beautiful trails, this one is probably the most outstanding, yet it is one for sturdy hikers only- Starting at the Cherokee Orchard, we shall hike for the first three miles along the new trail to Rainbow Falls. Since we will return by a different route we will stop awhile to enjoy the grandeur and beauty of the stream that plunges over an eighty-three feet cliff to a rocky bed below. Few hikers have scaled Mt. LeConte by way of Rocky Spur because of its difficulty. Now, however, there is a Park Service, Class A trail, never over fifteen percent in grade, winding along this ridge. To our right, as we go, lie Bull Head and the lead to Balsam Top. To our left we get new views of Brushy Mountain, and almost at our feet an occasional glimpse into Roarin' Fork gorge, by which we will descend on Sunday. Frequent are the new beauties of this trail with its rugged and towering cliffs. Of course it Is called Rocky Spur. Whoever has spent a night on LeConte knows what to look forward to; and he who has not, —well, there is a world of delights in store for him. We must "hit the balsam" early as we 24
