  • FOREWORD In compiling this eighth annual handbook of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club your committee has had in mind the following objectives: To announce the program of the Club's activities for 1933; to stimulate a desire on the part of members and friends to hike and otherwise enjoy the out-of-door life; to acquaint people within the range of distribution of this book with the loveliness of the Great Smoky Mountains and surrounding territory; to produce a volume that in itself, through its binding, printing and contexture, will give pleasure to its owner. Being conscious of many limitations we can only hope for a small portion of success. Members and friends of the Club have given us invaluable aid and suggestions. For lack of space we could not publish all the material we had. There are many helpful and interesting features of former handbooks more important than some of the matter printed here, but within the few pages available for features, we have left the proven highway to seek new trails. That any merit resulting from this venture, as well as from past and future handbooks, might not be lost, we suggest that every member handle carefully and keep for future reference all of his handbooks. There always will be more good material than ever can be published in a single copy. The Hiking Club program for 1933 will compare favorably with the best of past years. There is an apparent tendency to a wider variety of activities, all of which contributes to a greater realization of the Club objectives. Throughout the book are to be found detailed
