"$^it -^ZT HJKE SUPERVISOR JANUARY 8 HIKE FROM INDIAN GAP TO NEWTON BALD BY WAY OF THOMAS RIDGE Here it is the first of a new year, and the members of the Hiking Club face 1933 with more and better spirit than ever. There will be quite a few new hikes this year, and this one will be made over a new trail. This new trail was completed about December 10, 1932, and was one of the five built by the National Park Service in their relief work within the Smoky Mountains National Park. We leave Indian Gap at elevation of 5000 feet and then go southeast down Thomas Ridge. We travel up and down, over peaks and through gaps 'til we reach the junction of Beetree Ridge. Along Thomas Ridge there are several points which are open and afford good views of the surrounding country in all directions. The intersection of Beetree and Thomas Ridges is four and one half miles, or half the distance from New Found Gap to Newton Bald. From here to Newton Bald is the best part of the hike. 13
