  • reach Clingman's in about three hours. We pass from the pastoral bald of Siler's over much similar territory, then come into the spruce and balsam of Clingman's Dome over a gradual, but always upward trail. The startling whirr of the ruffed grouse, or pheasant, may thrill us occasionally. We may see some wild turkeys if we keep together and keep quiet at likely places. We shall eat lunch at Clingman's Dome and climb the tower for a view. Carolina's side is much burned over, but Tennessee's side is a delight with Mount Collins, LeConte, Guyot, Kephart, Siler's, Gregory's, Thunderhead, and many others in view if the visibility is good. But we shall be wanting to get back to Siler's and then back to the cars. You will know you have been hiking, but it won't be from fatigue alone; you will remember the beauties and pleasures the rest of the year, and you'll come back again. Meet at the Saunders System at 6:30 P. M. on July 3rd. Bring anything you like for the first night's comfort by the campfire at the parking place. Bring along two canteens or their equivalent, blankets, food for six meals, and candle-lantern. The trip, exclusive of eats, should not cost you more than $2.50 or $3.00. Leaders: BROCKWAY CROUCH (3-0310) and TOM DEWiNE (County 5211). July 5 RYMER'S FERRY Leave Knoxville Sunday, July 5th, at 9 P. M. for a very delightful trip of six miles across the North Carolina line to Rymer's Ferry. This is a trip that should be taken by both old and new hikers. Drive 60 miles, 16 miles asphalt, 38 miles good gravel, and 6 miles chert. This is a beatutiful trip and takes one over one of the most scenic highways in East Tennessee. Just above Calderwood a marvelous view of the Calderwood Dam and Lake and surrounding mountains gives one a thrill not soon to be forgotten. Just beyond, Gregory's Bald looms above you.
