Well Martha your next question is whether I am willing for you to come to Nashville which is a verry (sic) hard question to answer for several reasons first I don’t know whether I will get a furlow (sic) to come home or not nor won’t know five minutes before I get it Jake Furlowes (sic) just who he pleases he furlowed (sic) four men the other day for twenty days all single men that will be no advantage to any boddy (sic) if they were to stay at home six Months 2nd I don’t know how long we will stay here I might write for you to come and against you could get here we might be gone 3rd if you come I am certain to not get a furlow (sic) and you coul -dent (sic, couldn’t) bring all of the children and I want to get a furlow (sic) to come home and see them all

In this letter written likely in the winter of 1864, Henry Marshall Misemer (1832-1865) writes his wife, Martha. He lists 5 reasons why she probably should not come to visit him in Nashville. He hopes that the war will be over by fall, but he may be wrong. He tells her to fatten up the sow and sow the meadow with timothy seeds for the horses and cows. He tries to answer her question about when his time will be up, but it is unclear to him as he is still not part of a full regiment, requiring 1,000 men and they only have 815. He requests that she knit him two pair of socks and also for her to send his cotton ones.
