H. M. Candler to P. L. Elliott, October 24, 1936

  • wcu_memories-426.jpg
  • In this letter, H. M. Candler is sending a check for $3.00 to P. L. Elliott, chairman of the Home Coming Committee, in exchange for two football game tickets. The game was being held as a fundraiser for the Madison Memorial in honor of Robert Lee Madison (1867–1954). Madison, considered as the founder of Western Carolina University, served as first president of Cullowhee High School, later Cullowhee Normal and Industrial School, from 1889-1912 and also from 1920-1923.
  • October 24, 1936 Hon. P. L. Elliott, Chairman, Home Coming Committee, Madison Memorial, Cullowhee, North Carolina, Dear Mr. Elliott: On my return to the office I found your letter enclosing two tickets to a foot ball game for the benefit of The Madison Memorial. I am enclosing herewith my check for $3.00, covering the price of the tickets. I regret exceedingly my inability to be present on this occasion, but on account of my court work it is impossible, but my thoughts and heart go out to you on this occasion. It is with profound pride that I contribute to this worthy cause. No better man ever lived than Prof. Madison. What little I am to-day is due to his untiring efforts in my behalf, and I have often in public speeches referred to him as the man who started me off on the right foot. I remember full well Prof. Madison's pioneer days at Cullowhee, and what a hard time and struggle he had to hold together and maintain the Cullowhee High School, which is now the Western Carolina Teachers College. He has certainly built a monument to himself and family. If my recollection serves me correctly, Prof. Madison first came to Jackson forty seven years ago, and in an educational, financial and social way, he has done more for the people of Western North Carolina than any man living. His work will go down in history unequalled by any other man. At any time I can be of any service to your organization, don't hesitate to command me. Yours very truly, H. M. Candler, HMC/M Check enclosed
