  • Honor School Founder While He Still Lives 1934 Western State Teachers College Will Set Up Memorial For Robert Lee Madison By R. W. PREVOST. Cullowhee, April 14. — Forty-nine years ago Robert Lee Madison, native Virginian and relative of President James Madison, came to the North Carolina mountains as a teacher, and incidentally to regain his health. This year "Western Carolina Teachers College at Cullowhee which he founded and in which he is still a teacher will honor his signal service to the course of education by establishing an unique memorial to him on the spot where he opened the little one-teacher school that was to grow into one of the outstanding teacher's colleges of the Old North State. The memorial which is a project of the college alumni association and friends of Professor Madison will be an attempt to bestow upon him during his lifetime and active service to the college some measure of honor and praise which his heroic contribution to educational advancement merits. The main feature of the memorial will be a huge fountain placed on the spot where the original one-room building stood. About the fountain rustic seats will be conveniently located, flag stone walks laid, and bird baths provided. The whole plot of ground which is now a part of the college campus will be landscaped and set to shrubs, flowers and grass. Occupying as it does a place near the principal entrance to the college grounds it will supply a touch of human artistry to the already picturesque endowments of nature. To further advance the memorial plan, there will be established one or more Madison Memorial scholarships which will be available on a competitive basis to young men who will devote their spare time to the care of the memorial. Those who obtain the scholarship will thereby pay all college expenses for the entire four-year course. They will be required to prepare themselves for; their service to the memorial by taking a short course under competent instructors in practical methods of horticulture. Professor Madison began his career as a teacher and apostle of education in North Carolina at the little mountain village of Qualla, Swain County, in 1885, when public education in this state was yet in its infancy. At that time the public money available for schools amounted to a, meagre sum sufficient to provide but two or three months of free school annually in widely scattered communities.
