  • Copyrigkted I*1 Ltc-iial Western Carolina University Hunter Library The Little Tennessee River with the Great Smokies in the background hundreds of thousands of acres of forest, with high mountain ridges interspersed with wide valleys and plateaus. Scattered about are fine waterfalls, lakes, tall cliffs of odd shapes and the forests are thick with flowering shrubs and plants. The wonderful highway system maintained by the state and several counties, as well as toll roads to some of the more inaccessible places, make it possible for the motorist to spend a whole month looking at an ever-changing spectacle of panoramas or intimate views of mountain scenes. Resorts are lavishly distributed through the mountains, with hotels, cabins and camps available everywhere. Golf courses and other playgrounds are provided in many places for those who wish to vary a program of motoring and fishing or hunting in season with other sports. Very near the Great Smokies are hotels, inns, and hoarding houses at which the visitor can secure the type of accommodations he or she prefers at a price that suits. The Great Smokies are equally accessible by train as by motor. Twenty-four
