great man he was destined to be some day, I had never met a mind just like his, and being such a dear, sweet, wholesome, handsome fellow, it made me feel so proud, there was my ideal young man, upon whom God had laid His hand, to do a special work for Him. It is so pleasing the way he has developed and is yet developing. When we get together next summer I will show you some of his ability along an entirely different line. That year, I did not want to go to Blue Ridge, I was not well, the trip was long and hard for me. I sat down once to tell the management that I could not come. Something urged me to go, if I had not gone I might never have met dear “Dick”, and of course would never have known you, Mr. Slagle and the rest of the family who I am so very anxious to see. I imagine myself now so thoroughly at home in your house. How I would love to have you, and Mr. Slagle go through, “Gods Little Workshop”, (my laboratory) where our dear boy “Dick” works when he is here. I want the rest of the family to know that should they ever have occasion to pass through

In this letter of October 30, 1928, George Washington Carver writes to Mrs. J.H. (Margaret Gillespie) Slagle recounting the first time he met her son, Thomas (Dick), and the potential for achievement he saw in Dick. He tells how knowing Dick, and the Slagle family through him, has brought him joy, and shares that he is open to having any of the Slagle family visit him in Alabama. Carver closes by thanking Mrs. Slagle for the comfort he has gotten from her Christian spirit and offers his prayers for her and her family.
