When I think of the present plight of our people and the different ills of today's society that work unfavorably against us, the chorus to a very old song comes to mind. The Song says, "If you got a problem you can not handle all you got to do is look up." In those words lies the answer to most of the problems we face as a people. Looking to the hills from whence cometh our help. Our ancestors had to live through grave oppression. Being ripped from their motherland, Africa, forced into slavery, millions killed and tortured for the sake of capital gain. Our ancestors survived. Being freed from physical bondage into situations that enslaved the mind, Jim Crow laws, the denial of human rights, not even being considered a full human being our people still persevered. When I take time to reflect on these things I often ask myself, "How did they do it?" How is it that they went through more than we could ever imagine, had a lot less in material possessions than we do, only got those things that they needed instead of the things they wanted and at all times, did not have the things that they needed and still lived better and had more inner peace than we have today? How is it so? They found something. Something that we have access to but do not use as much. They learned how to tap into the higher power. They knew how to look up. Our ancestors knew their limits: both mentally and physically. They knew how to move self out ot the way and trust in God to do the work. They had faith. But beyond having faith they knew that the Bible said in the book of James chapter 2 that, "Faith without works is dead." So even faith need a little help to go from the state of intangible to tangible. We as a people are dealing with many problems and circumstances that are different from our ancestors. No we are not physically enslaved, but we are enslaved mentally. We are killing each other without a thought. Our young people are bringing babies into the world that they can not care for. Some of our young people would rather risk their lives daily peddling dope on the streets to make a quick dollar than to get a real job and honestly earn a living. We are in trouble. And the only way we can get out is by looking up. Social programs are good but they can only do so much. Charitable organizations are good, but they come and go. The only thing that will last forever is the word of God it is the same yesterday, today, and forever. So it is time for us to go back to the source. The source that got our great-grandparents and our grandparents through. It is time for us to look up because we have many problems that we can not handle. All of our trials the Lord shall deliver us from them all.
