THE CULLOWHEE YODEL PERSONALS Mr. Ernest Phillips is employed by the Blackwood Lumber Company, at East LaPorte, for the summer. He will be back in school at the opening of the fall quarter. Miss Cassie Wallace, a former teacher in the Cullowhee Graded School, who is at present attending the University of North Carolina, has been spending several days with her mother, Mrs. Lena Wallace. Miss Mary Hunter, Secretary to President Hunter, has just returned to the Normal, after a two weeks' vacation, which she spent in Greensboro, W i 1 m i n gton, Wrightsville Beach, and other points of interest in the eastern part of the State. Miss May Benton returned to her home at West Plains, Mo., Sunday, June 29th, after a several weeks' visit with her sister, Miss Alice Benton, Instructor in the Normal School. Mrs. D. H. Tillett, Instructor in Primary Methods in the Summer School, spent last week-end at her home in Andrews, N. C. Miss Geraldine Grigsby went to Sylva, Saturday, June 28th, by way of Tuckaseigee & Southeastern Railroad, for a week-end visit in the home of Dr. and Mrs. Grover C. Wilkes. Mr. Charles Sutton, who is employed for the summer with the Georgia Railway & Power Company, was a visitor at the Normal School last week, looking for summer school teachers. He says that he will return to Cullowhee for the winter. Miss Hattie Mae Garrett is spending the vacation at Sandy Mush, picking cherries (according to latest Mr. Lyncii motored to Waynesville a few days, ago, for the purpose of testing out his new Ford. He says that it is quite satisfactory. The following members of the Summer School faculty went to Asheville on the 28th, for the purpose of shopping and sight-seeing: Misses Nettie Brogdon, Annie Ray, Ethel Fielding, Margaret McAdory. They were accompanied by Mr. Ralph Crawford, who drove the automobile for hte party. Mr. Mitchell Plemmons, a recent graduate of the Normal, was a visitor at the Summer School last week. He plans to teach in Jackson County during the coming year. Mr. L. L. Lohr entertained a few of his friends at a birthday dinner on Sunday evening, June 30th, at Jack's Cafe. The meal was especially enjoyed on account of the large serving of fish, which Mr. Lohr had caught and brought in as a surprise. The invited guests were: Misses Elizabeth Grigsby and Lisbeth Parrott, and Mr. C. H. Allen. Mr. Max Hooper, of Tuckaseigee, spent Sunday night, June 29th, at the Normal. He expressed his delight at * * I The Jackson County Bank I ! SYLVA NORTH CAROLINA I Miss Grace Cook, Teacher in Atlanta, Ga., visited in the home of Rev. and Mrs. W. F. West recently. She was greatly interested in the work of the Normal School. Miss Margaret McAdory, Instructor in Fine and Industrial Arts at the Summer School, went to Rock Hill, S. C, on July 4th, where she will lecture at Winthrop College. She is to talk on French Paintings in the Louvre, delivering the same lecture that she gave at Cullowhee several weeks ago. Miss Laura Kate Miller's class in Commercial Geography enjoyed a delightful trip to the pulp factory at Canton, Saturday, June 28th. Miss Eleanor Gladstone and Miss Miller chaperoned the crowd. Because of the failing health of her mother, Miss Irma Ellis is giving up her work as Principal of the Practice School next winter, and is returning to her home at Cary, where she will be Supervisor of the Primary Grades. President Hunter attended the meeting of the National Education Association, in Washington, June 28th to July 4th. Miss Irma Ellis and Mrs. J. N. Wilson chaperoned Miss Ellis' Sunday School Class of the Methodist Church on a week-end trip to Lake Junaluska during the latter part of Mr. Ernest Hall visited at the School recently. He says that he expects to resume his studies here next winter. Mr. Lucius Weaver, of the Honduras, and Mr. James Weaver, brother and nephew of Mrs. Lucy Posey and Mrs. H. T. Hunter, were recent visitors at Cullowhee, from which place they went to High Hampton and Fairfield Inn. Miss Katharine. Willett went to her home in Asheville to spend the weekend on the 15th. Nettie Franklin spent several days at her home in Canton during the last of July. Miss Myrtle Chandler is spending the summer at her home at Weaverville, N. C. She writes that she is anxious to receive the news from Cullowhee. Esther Gibbs celebrated the Fourth of July by going to Waynesville. Maude Williams went to Fairview, and Katharine Willett spent the week-end at her home in Asheville. Misses Myrtle and Mary Fulton write from their home at Gneiss, N. C, that they are enjoying their summer vacation, and will be ready to return to Cullowhee at the opening of the fall quarter. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University’s student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
