Southern Railway Company. OFFICE OP GENERAL PASSENGER AGENT, j W. A. Turk, General Passenger Agent. '*■ W**»W*4»" Avknuk w .. . n r November 11, 1899. Washington, D, C, ' My dear Mac: I have your very kind letter of November 9th, and if I come to Asheville on the 22nd I will certainly accept your kiad invitation and stop at the Battery Park Hotel. As to attending the meeting in question, I do not think now I will be able to attend it, but am unable to say positively. I am simply deluged with business, and am afraid I cannot afford to take the time to be personally at the preliminary meeting, as my presence is not absolutely essential, while at the same time I feel a great interest, as you are well aware, in anything that will pertain to building up or advertising Asheville and Western North Carolina. With kind regards, best wishes, and many thanks for your kind remembrance, I am, Very truly yours, Mr. E. P. McKissick, (Personal) Battery Park Hotel, Asheville, N. C. Mc

In 1899, the Parks and Forestry Committee of the Asheville Board of Trade sent out this letter to representatives of six states announcing an upcoming meeting. The meeting, scheduled for November 9th, was held for the purpose of organizing an association to promote a national park in the southern Appalachians. Indeed, the Appalachian National Park Association was formed at that meeting, held in the Battery Park Hotel in Asheville, North Carolina. More than 70 letters included here are responses to, or forwards of, the initial letter.
