Honorable Zebulon Weaver Asheville, N. C. Dear Zeb: I see that Secretary Iokes is to conduct a hearing in Asheville on September 10th on the Parkway matter. As I am just as deeply interested in seeing the location of this Parkway from Blowing Rock to the Smoky Mountains be kept in North Carolina and enter from the Horth Carolina side, as I was to see them locate it from the Virginia line, I shall be glad to attend the Asheville meeting, if you think my presence might be helpful. As you doubtless know, Honorable Josephus Daniels and I had a long talk with Secretary Iokes in Washington sometime ago, and I thought we had made a good impression on him so far as the entire road was concerned. I am ready to go anywhere and do anything within my power to help. Awaiting a reply and ecTMatc with best wishes, I am Copy riglited Material Western Carolina University HunterLibrary Sin0erely yOUrS , it. L. Doughton P. S. Have just heard from Secretary Iclces, informing me of the Meeting to be held on September 10th,

  • Zebulon Weaver (1872-1948) was a lawyer and U.S. Representative from western North Carolina. He was a member of the North Carolina Park Commission and was involved in the land acquisition process that went towards establishment of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and development of the Blue Ridge Parkway. This correspondence between R. L. Doughton, Chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means in the House of Representatives, and Zebulon Weaveer-a set of three letters-discuss the probability of the scenic Parkway being located in North Carolina. R.L. Doughton to Zebulon Weaver, June 27, 1934 In this letter Doughton assures Weaver that he was doing his best to convince Secretary Ickes to build the scenic Parkway in North Carolina. R. L. Doughton to Zebulon Weaver, September 3, 1934 In this letter Doughton mentions that Secretary Ickes was going to hold a hearing in Asheville in September regarding the location of the scenic Parkway and Doughton was willing to be present there. Zebulon Weaver to R. L. Doughton, September 8, 1934 In this letter Weaver expresses his disappointment about Ickes cancelling the Asheville hearing but hopes that they would still be successful in locating the Parkway in North Carolina.
