Speaker of The House of Representatives: v- In consideration of the fact of the- rapid and steadily in-' ■ ■■ if creasing rate at which the forests on the slopes of the Southern Appalachian mountains are being destroyed; the. growing frequency of the floods carrying away the fertile soils from this region and depositing the same in navigable streams; having recently caused over eighteen millions of dollars of damage, this Convention urges upon Congress the prompt passage of the Bill now before the House of Representatives providing for the establishment of tha factional Appalachian National Forest Reserve as the only possible mewis of over-coming these existing and increasing evils, ""(--; W, B. This 19-page series of documents includes resolutions proposed at a convention sponsored by the Appalachian National Park Association and Asheville Board of Trade. Held on October 25, 1902, the meeting promoted the idea of a national park in the southern Appalachians. Two weeks prior to the event, the Asheville Citizen ran an article noting that “A Hundred Towns and Cities Are Asked to Take Part.” Indeed, the convention was a success with 1,500 people from various states attending.
