( ( ( SECOND GENERATION OF CALDWELLS IN CATALOOCHEE (from 1860 on, the name appears occasionally as Colwell but more often as Caldwell) ~~ ( continued.) levi B. Colwell (or Caldwell) married Mary Ann Nailand (or Neyland) about 1836. lie was born Oct. 14, 1815, and died Nov. 4, 1864. Mary Ann or "Granny Pop,H as she came to be known, was born May 27, 1817, and died Feb. 18, 1917. Their 12 children are listed above. levi was captured by Union raiders marauding through Cata1oochee in 1864. He managed to escape, but died soon thereafter f rom the exposure and hardship he had experienced. It is not known whether the youngest daughter, Mary, was born before or after his death. At any rate, his widow, Mary Ann, was left with nine children still at home. levi's son And rew ("Andy") was made the administrator of his est.ete. Mary Ann's tragedy was compounded by the death of her father-in-law, James, in late 1866 or early 1867. A few months later (late 1867 or early 1868), Mary Ann Colwell married Jonathan H. Woody, a widower who had moved into the valley with five ch i ldren about 1866. North Carolina State Archives, Raleigh, N.C.; Estate Records, Haywood Co . , Inventories and Accounts of Sales, 1866-75, pp. 26-27, and 44, N.C. State Archives, Raleigh.) The 1860 Census for Madison County, N.C. (created from parts of Buncombe and Yancey Cos. in 1851) lists Jonathan H. Woody, age 41 . and his wife Malinda (Plemmons), age 41, and their nine children: William M. , born c. 1843; Martha Jane, born c. 1844; James Valent i ne, born 1846; Susannah A., Born 1848; Nancy M. (or J.), born 1850, Lucinda E., born 1852; Stephen l., born 1853; Robert Jackson, born 1856; and Rebecca E., born 1860. Jonathan's wife, Malinda, died about 1861. In 1866, he and five children, Susannah or Susan, Nancy, Stephen, Robert Jackson ("Jack"), and Rebecca (•Becky•) came from the Spring Creek area to Cataloochee in 1866. He and his family had known the Cal dwells for many years. By the time of the 1870 Census, six of the children of levi and Mary Ann Colwell had married and set up households of their own. The ir daughter Harriett Elizabeth and her husband, Dan Cook, had settled on Coggins Branch in the Little Cataloochee area; louisa Matilda and her husband, Creighton Bennett, had settled next to them; wh1le Nancy Jane and her husband "Fate" Palmer were in Cataloochee, as were the t hree older sons: William Jarvis Harrison and his wife Susan, the daughter of Jonathan Woody; Andy and his wife Charlotte, and David Marion and his wife Eliza. The 1870 Census of the Cataloochee area lists Jonathan Woody and his wife, Mary Ann, and indicates that three of his children (Steve, Jack, and Becky} and six of her children (Reuben, Hiram, John, Doctor, George, and Mary) were still living at home. The youngest child, Mary Caldwell, apparently died young. Uer name does not appear in any subsequent census. - Seven of the eight sons of Levi B. Colwell married and set up their own households on farms in Cataloochee. The son who left was Reuben A. who married a Nancy Woody (apparently not Jonathan's daughter , but surely related to him) somet ime after 1870 and moved to Spring Creek in Madison County where relatives of the Caldwells and Woodys were still living. 3d.
