Canopus AS-9 #2 9 Nov – 1922 – The Canopus departed – Boston, Mass. for Coco Solo, Canal Zone, where she underwent additional fitting out for her duties & then on to San Pedro, Calif. Navy Base for final modification. & then to act as a submarine tender for Division – 9- 17 July – 1923 – The Canopus sailed for Pearl Harbor an was assigned to Submarine Division – 17 of the Pacific Battle Force. 1/72

Note cards with a brief history of the 1919 passenger liner SS Santa Leonora that was converted to the submarine tender USS Canopus (AS-9) in 1922. Samuel Robert Owens (1918-1995) was stationed at Cavite Naval Yard in the Philippines when the United States entered World War II. He was a member of the crew of USS Canopus, which was actively involved in the defense of the Bataan peninsula until the fall of Bataan on April 9, 1942. The majority of the crew of USS Canopus, including Owens, were captured by the Japanese at Corregidor, and became prisoners of war. Owens remained a POW until the end of the war and received the Silver Star and Bronze Star for his service.
