EXTRACTS FROM PERSONAL LETTERS Chas. Hallock, Founder of Forest and Stream. Let the headwaters be protected and the National Reserve will be not only a beauty and joy forever, but will save the country from droughts and freshets, and bestow upon a grateful land a plentitude of fruition. All the dredging in the world and continuous appropriations from Congress can never keep our harbors from filling with land wash so long as the up-lands are disregarded. Moses H. Cone, New York City: I am very much interested in this matter and hope we can get Congress to see the matter as we do. Hon. A. D. Candler, Governor of Georgia: I thank you and the Association for the honor done me, and beg to say that I will take pleasure in accepting the position of Vice- President. Col. A. K. McClure, Philadelphia Times: If my name or efforts can be of any service to you in the matter, you are at liberty to command them. Senator J. C. Pritchard: I desire to commend the Association for the splendid work it has accomplished. Hon. Jos. Brown, The Times, Richmond, Va: The objects of the Association are, I think, exceedingly meritorious, and I shall be glad to advocate it and render you all the help I can to preserve the forests from destruction. 26

While the booklet is titled “fourth edition,” the first three editions have a different title and content. The first, second, and third editions are titled, “Reasons in Favor of the Establishment of a National Park in the Mountains of Western North Carolina.”
