The year has shown big wins and hard fought games. The sports year opened up with the WCU football team losing to two. top- notch teams; Middle-Ten- nessee State and Virginia Tech. The Catamounts lost their home opener to the Citadel in a hard- fought battle. They then recorded their first win of the season against Mars Hill during family week- end. Standing at 1-7, the Cat- amounts hosted Elon Uni- versity for their home- coming. The Catamounts defeated Elon 27-24 in an emotional, overtime vic- tory that had fans storm- ing the field. The win snapped WCUs 26 game losing streak to SoCon op- Chandler Black Sports Writer On Saturday, April 12, the Western Carolina Uni- versitys men and wom- ens track & field teams hosted the 2014 Beynon Sports Catamount Clas- sic. Fifteen teams from around the southeast competed in the event, according to cata- mountsports:com. Com- peting in the event were the following Southern Conference foes: Chatta- nooga and Wofford. The. day began with field events: mens ham- mer throw and womens javelin, both at 9:45 a.m. Andy Benesh_ repre- sented the Catamounts in the hammer throw by taking second place, throwing for a distance of 48.43 meters and a new personal best mark. Kim Cannon, Anne Greer and _ Stephanie . Burris took the top three Spots in womens javelin, respectively. Greer set a new personal best with a distance of 38.34 meters, . meters. ponents. The Catamounts - finished 2-10 and showed promise for a young team. The WCU womens soc- cer team finished 10-9 and earned a spot in the SoCon tournament. They fell in the quarterfinals to Furman. The Lady Cata- mounts showed excellent spirits and they are ex- cited for the future. WCUs womens volley- ball finished 18-13. The Lady Catamounts showed excellence early on in the season, with an electrify- ing win over rival Appala- chian State. This season, Senior Morgan Cochran became WCUs all-time leader in digs. However, the Lady Catamounts fell to Samford in the SoCon tournament. ' WCUs womens basket- ball team finished 15-17 and lost five of their last: seven. games. Despite their finishing with a re- cord below .500, the team showedimprovement over the past couple years. The Lady Catamounts were ranked seventh going into the Southern Confer- while Burris also set a new personal best with a distance of 36.51 meters. Twenty-one other mem- bers of the Catamount womens track & field team placed in their events. During the shot put event, Hailey Cook took third place. She also took third place in discus. Ali- sha Bradshaw took first plece in shot put and dis- c .Her discus win came with a season-high dis- tance of 45.52 meters. Devyn Ressler took first place in the pole vault event with a height of 3.68 Korie Bennett took second place, while Kayla Heineike finished third. In the long jump, Chenell Bryan finished first for the Catamounts with a distance of 5.53 meters, while Molly Fa- gan finished in third with a distance of 5.37 meters. Fagan also competed in the high jump, setting a new personal best height with 1.71 meters and fin- ishing second behind Xaveria Bass. Bass set a ence tournament. They defeated UNC. Greens- boro in the first round of the tournament and most people thought their sea- son would end there as they prepared to face sec- ond-ranked Furman. However, for a team that believed in them- selves when no one else would, they upset Fur- man to advance to the semifinals where they fell to Davidson. j Despite their loss to Davidson, Catamount na- tion was thrilled that the Lady Catamounts showed the rest of the SoCon t iey were a team to be feared. Rene Wakaman and Jus- tin Taylor were named to the 2014 SoCon All-Tour- ~nament team. The mens basketball team showed a_ strong showing in the Southern Conference tournament. The Catamounts were the fifth seed and man- aged to make a run that included wins over the fourth and overall num- ber one seed to reach the championship. The Cata- new personal best height also with 1.74 meters. ' Anisia Starege finished third for the Catamounts. In the triple jump, Bass placed and set a new per- sonal best with a distance of 11.21 meters. Running events began at noon on Saturday with the 3000 meter Steeple Chase. Michelle Provost won, this event for WCU. with a new personal best time of 11 minutes and 21.31 seconds. The womens 4x100 me- ter relay was slated next, and Janise Robinson, Tayla Carter, Genevieve Emrick and Tiffani Lewis placed first with a time of 46.17 seconds. : Jocelyn Keen, Michae- la Williams, Lena El- liott and Michaela Birek placed first for the Cata- mounts in the womens 4x400 meter with a time of 3 minutes 49.90 seconds. Birek also competed in the 400-meter hurdle event, setting a new meet record and finishing first with a time of 1 minute and 2.75 seconds. Trey Sumler and Tawaski King posted second team All-Tourna- ment team and Brandon Boggs and James Sinclair were named first team All-Tournament. The mens and wom- ens indoor track team, coached by Danny Wil- liamson won the SoCon indoor track champion- ship. Williamson won coach of the year and other runners received This er tribute to the excellent track and field program that WCU has. Womens tennis was led by Stacia Kissell this sea- son. The sophomore was able to record a 15-5 sea- and Latasha Pride fin- ished third. In the 800 meter run, El-. liott finished in first place with a time of 2 minutes 11.71 seconds and Hayley Tomlinson finished sec- ond place. In the 100 meter hurdle run, the top three run- ners were from WCU and each set new personal best times. Bass finished LeNiesha Kearse came in second and Brit- tany Diggs took third place for the Catamounts. In the 100 meter. dash, Carter placed first, Rob- inson finished second with a season best time _of 12.11 seconds, and Bass finished in third with a career-best time of 12.27 seconds. Carter also finished firstin the 200 meter dash. Emrick finished second with a personal best time of 24.61 and Corina Ar- chie-McMillan entered in third with a personal best time of 24.61 seconds. Twenty-four members of the Catamount mens track & field team placed in their events. Whee bleed purple and gold: A year in review son in singles play. The team as a whole was able to enter the Southern Conference tournament as the tenth seed. The mens golf team was led by junior J. T. Poston. The junior has been ranked as a top 25 American-born golfers in the Palmer Cup rank- ing system. He has been as high assixth on the national list this season and is currently ranked eleventh. Poston also ranks fifth on the recent Golfstat Cup and is the only Southern Confer- ence mens golfer listed in the top 50 of both the United States and Euro- pean teams. The Catamount Softball team was led by two stel- lar freshmen this season. Kara Salvo and Courtney Price lead the team bat- ting average with batting averages above .300. Sal- vo has recorded 22 RBIs this season. i ~The Catamount Base- ball team has had an eventful season that has included two wins over Jared Johnson took sec- ond place in shot put and third place in the discus event with a season-high toss of 42.46 meters. ._ Josh McSwain took third place in the high jump with a personal best height of 1.91 meters, first place in the long jump, and second place in the triple jump. The pole vault event saw three Catamounts place with Dustin Triplett finishing first. Keith Leonard finished in sec- ond place and Tim Buzy- an finished in third place. In. the mens triple.. jump, Davidson John- son won the event with a personal best distance of 15.42 meters and Tyler Bell took the third place spot for the Catamounts with a personal best mark of 14.19 meters. Jermaine Lewis, Jef- fery Hendricks, Earl Rah- ming and Jerry Wicker- son teamed up to win the 4x 100 meter relay for the Catamounts. In the 4 x 400 meter relay Ammar Phil- lips, Lewis, Aaron Harris and Jamie Bigby finished Photos Submitted by Mark Haskett nationally ranked top 25 programs. The opening day at number two-ranked Mis- sissippi State University the Catamounts were able to pull the upset win- ning 3-2. The Catamounts also hosted the number 15 ranked Clemson Ti- gers this season. This game was the first time | the Catamount baseball team had been televised and they were able to win 18-10. During that streak the team held the nations longest home winning streak until they lost to East Tennessee State Uni- versity on March 19. The Catamount sports year created many mem- orable moments for each team and great things to look forward to. Each team shed blood, sweat and tears for the purple and gold and rep- resented this University well. Catamount fans and students should look forward to the upcoming seasons for WCU. Classic first. Rahming won the 400-meter with the best time in his career of 47.82 seconds, Demari. Bosewell finished third with a career best of 48.70 seconds. Harris set a new per- sonal best time of 1:53.30 during the 800-meter, earning him the top spot. Abraham Faison fin- ished first in the 110-me- ter hurdles and Marquis Bailey finished second. Faison also competed in the 400 meter hurdle event and placed first. Eric Blake finished third in the 400-meter hurdle. In the 5,000 meter, Tra- vis Alfaro finished first with a time of 15 minutes and 24.66 seconds. Clay Howarth and Chase Fisher followed him, respectively, to fin- ish second and third.
