  • The Western Carolinian SPORTS Carolina Panters: Off Joshua Turner Contributing Writer The Carolina Pan- thers finished the 2012 season hot, winning their last four games. They finished 7-9 on the year and second place in the NFC South. This offseason could be what pushes the Panthers over the .500 winning mark and into playoff contention. This free agency is a big period with the Panthers, who are cur- rently scheduled over the cap space. This means that players need to be released or have their contracts restruc- tured. The salary cap is a limit enforced by the NFL that limits how much money a team may spend. Also, the NFL draft is coming up with the Panthers holding the 14th overall pick. This pick and the six others held by the Panthers could help improve struggling positions on the team. With the current free agent period, there are two players that stick out with hefty con- tracts, Jon Beason and Chris Gamble. Beason has missed the majority of the past two seasons due to in- jury and lost his middle linebacker spot to Luke Kuechly. Beason is a capable outside line- backer candidate but is guaranteed $12 million in his current contract. Missing the past two seasons, it would be preferable if the Pan- thers restructured his contract. If he refuses a contract restructure, the only choice may be to cut him from the team to save that $12 million. Gamble is ina similar situation as well. He is holding $10.9 million of the cap, is turning 30 this year and has been injury prone. Having two younger players in Captain Munnerlyn and Josh Norman at the same position does not help Gambles case. However if done, the Panthers need to reduce their money below the cap limit to avoid being fined before the season starts. Also, due to this cap space issue, the Panthers have no room to pursue any top free agents in the market this season. The draft is going to be the key area that the Panthers find players to upgrade their team. With the 14th overall pick, the Panthers will have their eye on Defen- sive Tackle, Safety and Offensive line pros- pects. These were the positions that haunted the Panthers with inju- ries this last season. I believe that with the 14th overall pick the Panthers will pursue defense and look at De- fensive Tackle or Safety. At the safety position, Kenny Vaccaro from the University of Texas will be a key player to watch. He could up- What's Ryan Michaud Sports Editor Editors Note: These predictions were made a week in advance of the tournament. See who guessed right. About a year ago from this time, Western Carolina Universitys mens basketball put ona show on national televi- sion as they competed in the championship of the SoCon Tournament. The Catamounts came up short however, one shot close, to advancing to the NCAA tournament. The Catamounts are looking to bounce back from the loss to David- son in double overtime last year and hop on the train to dance in March. The Catamounts had a rocky season, finishing 13-18, with a 9-9 record in the SoCon confer- ence. However, head coach Larry Hunter and his squad know better than anyone that the playoffs are an entirely new season. With the SoCon bracket now set in stone, WCU played the Citadel on Friday, March 8, at 8 p.m. Though many in Cullo- Your Guess: Stu whee think WCU can make arun, some think they will only make it past the first round. David Mondshane, a junior majoring in finance, is one of them. He stated, We will win the first round but probably will lose the next round. We play Citadel first, and if we win we will play the College of Charleston. They are too good for us this year. One aspect fueling the Catamounts fire is their longing for revenge. Last year, WCU rolled their way to the cham- Offer only valid at this location: 284 E. Main St. Sylva 828.631.3100 grade a safety position that never had a clear starter this past sea- son. Vaccaro is a hard- hitting safety that can also cover. Also Sheldon Richardson, a Defen- sive Tackle from the University of Missouri, could be a prospect still on the board at the 14th pick. Later in the draft, it will be important to gain depth on the offen- sive line. This past season the starting Center and Guard were injured, causing a decline in rushing yards per game. The general man- ager of the Panthers, David Gettleman, stated this offseason he envi- sions an offense with a powerful running game ents predict So pionship game and ran toe-to-toe against the SoCons favorite, David- son. WCU took them to double overtime but an attempted game-winning 3-point shot by Keaton Cole rimmed out, and Davidson went dancing. Ryan Grace, a senior majoring in entrepre- neurship, believes this could be the year. Coming from a fan who has watched every mens home game, I believe our postseason will all depend on our first half efforts. We have all been aboard the struggle bus but we always make a strong push, said Grace. I dont know if that will work in the postseason. We have to play strong the whole game and at the end of the game the team with the most points will win. Cameron Milloni, a junior majoring in psy- chology said, WCU has the ability to be a great story or a great disap- pointment. Chris Wright, a junior, agrees, say- ing, If they depend on each other and keep _ their heads up, victory should be there. March 15, 2013 AS season improvement and a vertical passing game. This seems like a clear message that of- fensive line will be ad- dressed in this draft. In the second round, two good prospects could be available. As this offseason pro- gresses, it will be im- portant to keep an eye on free agency as well as the draft. Expect the Panthers to make moves before the draft in April to reduce below the salary cap. With the draft combine and college pro days coming up, players will move up and down the draft boards.
