The Western Carolinian SPORTS. February 22, 2013 A5 Catamounts wrap up indoor Ryan Michaud Sports Editor As the weather slowly warms up, Western Carolina Universitys track and field program is running ahead to outdoor season. WCU will wrap up their in- door season on Feb. 24, as they compete in the SoCon championships in Winston-Salem. WCU finished the Tiger Paw Invitational, which was held in Clemson, S.C., on Feb. 9, marking a success- ful weekend for both men and women. Many student athletes broke personal records while qualifying for the final races. Among those are freshman Jamie Bigby, who ran a personal best 800 meter, finish- ing second with a time of 1:56. Joining Bigby was teammate Aaron Tribble, who ran his fastest 400 meter witha time of 48.57 seconds. The women left a mark in the race as well, as several women broke personal records. Freshman Achsah Brice jumped 11.90 meters in the triple jump, her best of the season. The 4x400 meter relay teams both placed second. Corina Archie- McMillan, Jocelyn Keen, Taylor Carter, and Genevieve Emrick ran together to clock in at 3:52. The mens team consisted of Aaron Harris, Brandon Haris- ton, Aaron Tribble and Earl Rahminng. They finished second, behind Clemson University, with a time of 3:16. Senior Josey Weaver left a mark in the re- cord books as he won the 5,000 meter race with a time of 14:46.60. Weaver beat the previ- ous record, formerly held by Robert Baker back in 1985. Weaver beat the record, which was 14:46.80 by one inch. Sophmore Travis Alfaro finished 3rd in the 5000 meter, running it in: 15 minutes flat. Freshman Tayla Carter made her way into the record books, breaking the WCU record in the 60 meter dash in 7.48 seconds, Carter ran another personal best in the 200 meter with 24.61 seconds;,-finishing just shy of the school record, 24.51 seconds. The indoor season fin- ishes up on Feb. 24, with the ASU Pre-Conference meet and then the So- Con championship. Outdoor track opens on March 14, in Athens, Georgia, with the Geor- gia Relays. Head coach Danny Williamson and his team have the same goal in mind as always, victory in the SoCon championship. Key male runners and jumpers to watch to make an impact in the outdoor season include Weaver, Alfaro, Harris, Bigby and Tribble. Look for Carter to improveon track her events and continue - to break more records. Freshman Kiyonna Morgan, who is major- ing in psychology, ex- pressed her excitement about outdoor track. One thing I love above all else about this track team is the team continuity. I have never been on such a close knit team, on and off the track. This season we are looking forward to championship, stated Morgan. Outdoor track starts March 14, and the team has been preparing to please the fans. Catamount basketball looks to SoCon tournament Joshua Turner Contributing Writer With a month left in the college basket-. ' ball regular season, the Catamount Nation turns its eyes to the SoCon tournament. The winner ofthe tournament will get an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. _ The regular season comes into play with the conference tourna- : ment because no team has ever won witha first round bye. West- ern Carolina Universi- ty came very close last year to being the first . team to do so but fell short in the champion- ship game, losing in overtime to Davidson. The new tournament format for the 2013 season guarantees that the first round byes go to the regular season . North and South divi- sion champions. The two other first round byes in the past went to the second place of the North and the South, but this year the last two byes go to the third and fourth best overall record in the conference, regardless of whether they are in the North or the South divisions. As of Valentines Day, the North division leader is Elon Univer- sity and the South divi- sion leader is Davidson. Looking at the remain- ing schedule, the Col- lege of Charleston and WCU look to have good chances to lock up a__ first round bye. Elon looks to have a ' favorable schedule to keep their regular sea- son lead of the North division, They are on aroll to the SoCon tournament. They have a 9-3 record in confer- ence and have two _ marquee matchups left in their regular season. Elon will host WCU and Davidson in their Offer only valid at this location: 284 E. Main St. Sylva + 828.631.3100 w remaining schedule. Lucas Troutman and Jack Isenbarger, who both average around fifteen points per contest, are leading the team to Asheville. Davidson is in control of their destiny for the Souths regular divi- sion crown. They have a 12-1 record in the conference. They have two key road games on the remaining schedule when they play Col- lege of Charleston and Elon. Jake Cohen and DeMon Brooks lead Davidson, and they will be key players to. their success on the road. In the race for the our lT department before changing any settings on company-owned computers. This restaurant i license Wi sumers computer using this Wi-Fi service. The Zaxbys ho _ two other first round byes, College of Charleston looks to be a lock for one. They hold a 10-3 record in conference play and will Davidson and play at WCU in their remaining schedule. Andrew Lawrence and Anthony Stitt lead Col- lege of Charleston in points per game. The last first round bye is a tight race between Samford (6-5), Appalachian State (6-6), WCU (6-6) and UNCG (5-7). WCU hosts its - last four games of the season at home. WCU holds a strong win per- centage at home under .coach Larry Hunters tenure. Key match-ups for the Catamounts will be Elon on the road and then hosting the College of Charleston. Trey Sumler and Ta- waski King will be key players to watch if the Catamounts can make arun in their remain- ing schedule. As history has shown in the SoCon tourna- ment, to lock up a bid to the NCAA/tournament the team must be able to secure a first round. bye. The SoCon tourna- ment will be held from March 8th to the llth and will be hosted in Asheville, NC. e
