Ramsey Center high- light the 2011-12 Western Carolina mens basketball schedule unveiled by head coach Larry Hunter. Seven of the Catamounts 2011-12 opponents saw post-season play a year ago that includes third-seeded Purdue three others that advanced to the NCAA Mens Basketball Championship Field a sea- son ago. Western Carolinas 2011- 12 schedule culminates with the Southern Conference Mens Basketball Champi- onship as it makes its return to Asheville, N.C., and the Asheville Civic Center for the first-time since 1995. We are again fortunate to be able to assemble a very challenging and diverse non- conference schedule this year, said Hunter, whose squads have won SoCon North Division titles two of the past three seasons. We play teams from several of the power conferences, along with teams from the Missouri Valley, Mid-Amer- ican and Big South confer- ences. This is a schedule that will afford our team room for growth and development as we prepare for the rigors of the Southern Conference schedule, Coming off the programs third-straight winning sea- son, Western Carolina opens the 2011-12 campaign with . seven-straight games away from home to match the secs ; ond-longest such streak es- tablished one year ago when __ the Catamounts played sev- en-consecutive road games spanning, the month of De- cember. The season opens with a Friday night road trip to the Colonial Life Arena to face the South Carolina Gamecocks (Nov. 11). The Catamounts travel to Chat- tanooga (Jan. 5), Davidson - (Jan, 12), arch-rival Appa- lachian State Ge 21) and consecutive trips to UNC Greensboro (Jan. 28) and Wofford (Jan. 30) to close the month. WCU bookends the Feb- ruary schedule with con- . secutive home games by welcoming Chattanooga _(Feb. 2) and Georgia South- em (Feb. 9) on the open- ing weekend of the month before closing the regular season with divisional. foes Samford (Feb. 23) and arch- rival Appalachian State (Feb. 25) in the finale. Road games during the month include trips to College of Charleston (Feb. 9), Furman (Feb. 11) and Elon (Feb. 18). Western Carolina fin- ished the 2010-11 season by winning eight of its final nine regular season games to claim a share of the SoCon North Division title, posting an 18-15 overall record. The squad also garnered a No. 1 seed in the SoCon tourna- ment for just the second-. timein program history. The Catamounts return 10. play- ers from a season ago, eight of which seeing court-time a year ago including reign- ing SoCon Freshman of the Year, Trey Sumler, and red- shirt senior Harouna Mu- tombo, who also garnered the league s top rookie hon- or in his first season and is a two-time All-SoCon tourna- . ment selection. All told, the Catamounts return three of their top five scorers in Sumler (11.5 ppg), Mutombo (10.1 ppg) and freshman Brandon Boggs _ (7:7 ppg). The non- conference opponents will help prepare us for the rig- ors of Southern Conference play. The SoCon continues to grow in talent and has consistently competed in post season tournaments. Western Carolina opens ' Southern Conference play on December 3, hosting Da- - vidson. The last time the Cat- amounts opened SoCon play in December was in 2008, when the WCU opened So- Con play, ironically, against Davidson in 2008. This season, our team will be young and hungry as we look to build on fast years tournament win, we are poised and ready to compete for a champion-: ship, Middleton admitted. This will be an exciting season, and we look forward to watching the growth of our team as the season pro-. gresses.
