There, Martin and his team will spend two weeks per- forming and having a vaca- tion of sorts during the be- ginning of July. Its a beautiful outdoor arena, Martin said. There. are different schools per- forming there over the holi- day... we will be there the longest. I think they were very pleased with last years performance. The grant given will pay for their travel, the actors wages, the crews wages, the set, costumes, etc. It (the grant) allows Western audiences to enjoy the performances as well, said Martin, explaining that to put on the show in Roa- noke the cast can practice and raise revenue here in Cullowhee with two of their performance dates on the Western campus in Hoey Au- ditorium. Youre a Good Man Charlie Brown, which has been performed at Westerti before, is a family-friendly musical based on the all- time favored comic. strip Peanuts written by Charles Schulz. Its about a piano, and... the life of a piano as it goes through the 20th century. Well, as it does, it incorporates all the Irving Berlin songs. Maybe not all of them, but pretty close with songs How Deep is the Ocean, Any- thing You Can Do, Al- Cheek to Goes ul and more. On July 6, the students begin their first on in i The anticipated Sex and the City sequel was filled _ with sparkle as Carrie (Sar- ah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), Charlotte (Kristin Davis), and Saman- tha (Kim Cattrall) reunited for an exotic vacation for the fist time since Carries unpleasant Mexican honey- moon two years earlier. The film opens up with a - monologue by Carrie, as is consistent to the first film and _ HBO series. She reflects on - how she met her three clos- _ est girlfriends in the days she _ refers to as B.C. (Before Car- _ tie). Theres a wedding scene _ where Liza Minelli makes a_ _ cameo appearance and both conducts the ceremony and sings Beyonces Single La- dies, charming the audience with humor. Where the sequel differs from the original is that 3 out of 4 women are now married, Carrie being the newest wed. Their lives have become re- alistic and stressful and while Carries glamorous life has become dull with her hus- band, Big (Chris Noth) want- ing to stay home and watch TV, she yearns for the life she once had. Carrie meets up with her long-lost love Aidan (John Corbett), thousands of miles away from New York. Was it _ fate? Did it mean something? These were questions she | asked herself. Both of them, _ now married to others, ended up going on a dinner date in Abu Dhabi, which resulted in a sudden impulsive kiss shared before departing in reprets She felt guilty bhmbdiate ly. She felt so guilty that she convinced herself that she needed to call her husband right away to let him know, which becomes Carries cli- mactic drama, which is inevi- noke and end with I Love a Piano at the outdoor pavil- ion on July 15. There are also _perfor- mances at the Smoky Moun- tain Center for Performing Arts in Franklin, North Car- olina on June 29, 7:30 p.m. and Highlands Performing Arts Centre in Highlands, North Carolina on June oe 7:30 p.m. To see the musical won- ders of Charlie Brown and I Love a Piano for .. ene attend the Western table in any Sex and the City storyline. If there is to be anything negative said about this film, it would be that the. story- line seemed a bit flat. With a role opposite the previous film, Miranda struggles with a male coworker who keeps silencing her. with his hand. Samantha partakes in a Su+ zanne Somers diet regiment to repress her menopause symptoms. Charlotte comes to grips with the stress of motherhood, while being in- secure about the bra-less nan- ny that takes care of her kids. These roles are nothing however, compared to the directors focus upon Car- ries concern over trying to make sense of her glamorous marital needs and how they conflict with her husbands. They fight like a couple that sincerely wants to survive, Carolina shows. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults. I Love a Piano will be performed at the Hoey Auditorium on July 2 at 7:30 p.m. Youre a Good Man Charlie Brown will have - two performances on July 3, one at 2:00 p.m. and an en- core at 6:00 pm both in the Hoey Auditorium next to the Stillwell building. Please support the arts this sum- mer, and do not miss out on a wonderful summer treat! working their way toward compromise and an under- standing that a relationship need not be traditional in or- der to succeed. And the film ends with a predictable, and sweet closing which-once -again-leaves you loving the Carrie Bradshaw love story we all have followed. The film was rather long with a running time of 2 hours and 25 minutes, and _seemed to drag on with a rather finicky plot. However, for diehard Sex and the City fans like myself, it was ab- solutely crucial for me to see the film and keep up: with my favorite New York City writer. With such booming . box office numbers the first weekend, I believe I am not alone in my decision. Lets hope if they come out with a third film that it is more eventful and less humdrum. ees
