She cant just throw on jeans and a t-shirt, no that just wont do. She wants to show off her curves, and dress up for the big night, so she puts on a cute sweater dress and tights, then puts on her best pair of boots. Tights have become an essential fashion item for women today, especially here at Western. The weather turns too cool for cute summer | dresses and shorts in mid- September, and doesnt get warm enough to bring out the spring styles until late March, when the semester is almost over. A girl cant wear plain old jeans everyday of the week: the solutiona cute pair of tights dressed up with a flashy top and the necessary boots. This outfit has made dressing up and looking cute possible for students at WCU. This fashion trend just _ wont seem to go away. Even in warm weather girls wear tights for.a sense of com- fort. The legs are one of the most popular features when it comes to what a man looks at. _ During the winter, girls dont spend as much time in the sun and cant maintain that summer tan; tights are often used to cover up the pale legs when girls still want to wear dresses. Lets be honest, dur- ing the winter when its cold outside and we arent weat- : ing shorts every day, its easy to skip a shaving or two on the legs. There is nothing at- tractive about a natura! pair. of socks on a woman, so once again tights are used to cover Tanning beds popularity grow in spring Katelyn Cooper|Contributing Writer * With springtime in sight and the anticipation of warmer weather, tanning beds are hotter now than ever. Whether it is to have the bronze glow, avoid sunburn, or just look better in your Spring Break attire, this up- coming season keeps the tan- ning beds lit. Kim Hall, owner of Totally Tan in Sylva said, We have three times as many custom- ers in the spring as any other season. Tanning salons around Cullowhee and Sylva are cer- tainly not hurting for business this time of year. Morgan Carver, a junior at WCU said, I go a few times. before it gets warm so that when the sun comes out so I dont get sun burnt. Hannah Weant, a junior at WCU admitted that she does go to the tanning bed more in the spring. She said, I go because I want to be tan for the summer and especially Spring break, I dont even think about the health risks when I go. There are many studies, and written articles preaching to us about the negative health risks with tanning beds. How- ever, many students agreed that the positive benefits overshadowed the negative risks. A. Quincy Long, a senior at WCU said, Knowing that something is bad generally doesnt stop me. I do a lot of things that I know are bad for up the legs when they dont look their best. In the workplace tights are used to. make on outfit _ that may not be as conserva- tive as it should be, work. To save money, instead of going out and buying grown-up clothes to wear at work, try a pair of tights under the lit- tle denim number you wore out last night; tights offer just the right amount of cov- erage you need to make the dress acceptable in the pro- fessional world. Tights are also an essential part of the wardrobe because they can be worn with a pair of flats to go to class in, and can in- stantly be dressed up by add- ing a pair of heels; on colder days, through on your Uggs, or cowboy boots over your tights and you are ready to go! What started as having a simple black and brown pair tucked in the closet to still look fashionable on a rainy day, tights have be- come an essential part of the wardrobe. Tights can now be found in a wide range of colors, full length that reach the ankles and can be worn with flats, or mid-calf tights to wear withheels for a fun night out. Now, tights are being manufactured to look like denim and have fake pockets on the back to give the illusion of being a pair of jeans. If youre feeling wild and want to add spice to that little black dress, a pair of an- imal print tights might just _ be the perfect touch. With spring approaching and new fashions emerging, it will be interesting to see if tights will remain in the feminine wardrobe. me. I will deal with them later in life. : While the risks of tanning beds are serious, positive ben- efits can also be found. Those with Vitamin D deficiencies can benefit positively from tanning beds. Since Vitamin D is predominantly found in seafood and dairy prod- ucts, those who do not like seafood or dairy products do not get their recommended dose of Vitamin D. Tanning beds have also been proven to Brittney Burns [Contributing Writer For most students, the first day of college means saying goodbye to your parents, a first taste of freedom, the first step toward indepen- dence and a career, and well, lets be honest, one massive party. For those entering col- lege for the first time after serving for the United States Military though, they have a different set of concerns and expectations for their college experience. Lisa Burgess, a 48 year .old English major and soci- ology minor, is returning to school for the first time in 25 years. After high school Burgess volunteered to de- fend her country by joining the United States Air Force (USAF). When asked about receiving support from fam- ily members Burgess said, Family has always been supportive, but only after Il accomplished years and certain goalsnot so much when I first began each [mil- itary and college] adventure. Burgess was originally in- terested in the military be- cause she wanted an oppor- tunity to travel around the world, and throughout her re- markable career in the USAF she did just that. Burgess served as a Special Military, Intelligence Agent, which is also known as a spy. Vari- ous assignments during her career led Burgess on dan- gerous missions; she was . often ordered to intercept top secret classified docu- ments from our nations en- emies. She also served as an Airborne Communications Officer on an EC 135 Air- Wwcu craft. While serving, Bur- gess visited various destina- tions around the world; she has served in Okinawa Japan, Spain, and Portugal. Also, she has served in several de- partments within the USAF such as the RAF (Royal Air Force) Lakenheath, and RAF Mildenhall. * Being the only female on a crew of 12 men on alert in Portugal, was one of the hardest aspects for Burgess while in the military. She ex- perienced sexual overtones on anormal basis. She had to work harder than most men during her career to re- ceive the same respect. The worst experience Burgess had while serving was while she was stationed in Kuwait for 15 months. It wasnt the climate or time away from home that made the visit hard; it was witnessing the deaths of women and chil- dren as well as her comrades that affected her the most. After serving in the USAF, Burgess enrolled in college to continue her education in hopes of becoming a col- lege professor. Burgess de- scribes the initial entry into college as being very scary because of her age. She was concerned about being able to learn at the necessary level college requires in order to graduate. She also hates to fail at anything, and wanted to be able to conquer college the same way she had other obstacles in her life. The en- couragement she received through being welcomed and accepted by young people has helped Burgess with the transition. She said, They [young people] seem inter- ested and impressed by me, but I dont know why. When asked about the hardest part of the transition from the military to college Burgess replied, Bringing my authoritative attitude and know-it-all mannerisms back to a civilian level of ac- expectations of myself and especially of others which tends to alienate me from a social crowd. | Although her military at- titude hinders her social in- teraction in college, she ex- plains that the discipline the military required of her helps her with the organization, dedication and determina- tion she needs to make good grades and to graduate col- lege. Even though Burgess is thankful for all the mili- tary has taught her, she does feel that by returning to col- lege at such a late period in her life, she in unable to ex- perience and enjoy different and unique college functions. The one aspect of the mili- tary that Burgess wants peo- _ ple to understand is that it is necessary. Despite politi- eal differences in opinion on its relevance and func- tion, Burgess is adamant about the educational bene- fits the military has to offer - as well and the opportunity to broaden a persons world | cultural view. She also wants people to know what an im- portant role women actu- _ ally play in the military, be- cause their involvement is often overlooked. Burgess stated, Women do contrib- ute more than they are given credit forbut it is a self contained society with strict, _Aspy is among us at rigid rules that make it hard for the people who leave the military to re-enter civilian society. There are few pro- grams established to guide military members back into the routine of civilian life. When asked about Burgess overall perspective of her military career she proudly said, I wouldnt trade my military career for anything, but I wish I could find a ~ way to be less authoritative | in voice and manners so | not be seen as a bitter, bossy and antagonizing person; this actually is what keeps me at odds with my son, my fam- ily and others. Men find this attitude to be aggressive and they dont want to date me . because they feel threatened by my independence and frankness. I have been fortunate enough to have a class here at Western with Ms. Burgess. Iam among the many who find her to be interesting and. impressive; anyone who can say they were a real spy is ok in my book! Most older adults that I have had class. with try too hard to impress the professor and to fit in with the younger students as if they need to prove them- selves because of their age. I believe that Ms. Bur- gess authoritative and inde- pendent attitude-younger stu- dents are able to respect her more because she views us as equal and not as children. | 1for.one respect and. appre- . clate.all the time Burgess has spent serving our country as ~ well as the contribution she is, ,. making and will continue to make as a college professor. clear up skin, and can provide a sense of healthy well-being. There are, in fact, ways to use tanning beds that could lower the risks of negative outcomes. Just like enjoying the outside sun, sunscreen can be used in the tanning bed to block some of the harmful rays. Also, choosing an ap- propriate time for your skin type is crucial. Using mois- turizing lotion after lying can also help the skin re- juvenate. The negative ef- fects of tanning beds should not be ignored, however as using tanning beds is a trend that will continue we should learn to take every possible precaution. The reward of no tan lines can come with a price. How- ever, like the saying goes, Too much of anything will harm you in the end. So if you lay in tanning beds to | have the bronze glow, avoid sunburn, or just simply to look better in your spring attire, just remember to tan smart.
