According to au- thorities, on the drive from The Summit, which is lo- cated across from the main entrance to campus on the other side of HWY 107, the students took random po- litical signs to put over the bears head in an effort to cover the head wound and prevent blood from spilling into the bed of the truck. The students then dumped the bear into the center of the roundabout at the entrance to campus at about 2:40 am on Monday, October 20 and returned to their apartment. The students _ re- portedly told Police Chief Tom Johnson that their ac- tions were not politically or racially motivated. Accord- ing to the Public Relations department, one of the stu- dents involved in the inci- dent is African-American. As of the date of publication, no official charges have been filed by authorities in the incident and none of the names of the sus- pects or photos of the scene of the incident have been released. Campus law en- forcement officers and N.C. Wildlife Resources agents will discuss their findings with the District Attorneys Office to determine whether charges would be appropri- ate. According to N.C. Wild- life officials, it is bear season and the cub weighed 75 lbs, above the 50 lbs minimum. On Thursday, Octo- ~ ber 23, brothers Marvin Ca- leb Williams, 20, of Wilks- boro, and Mathew Colton Williams, 18, of Scott Resi- dence Hall, Cullowhee, were formally charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct and a wildlife act without a license or permit. - They were served with the citations, similar to traffic tickets according to the Cit- By Max Kath Staff Writer I have a confession to make: I dont know as much about Paul Newman as I feel I should. Its not that I have anything against him I just havent seen that many of his movies. Ive seen Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Road to Perdition and listened to him speak in the Pixar film Cars but I havent seen some of his other memorable roles. Everyone always talks about how much they love 1973s the Sting or how the Oscar he got for Martin Scorseses 1986 film the Color of Money was very deserved, but the problem is that I havent seen either one of those movies or any of the other films that he has been in. Im still trying to get the time to watch Cool Hand Luke and have to wonder how I would approach his death differently if I had been a life long fan. The one thing I do know is that Paul Newman was a God among most of the actors from his generation, as well as being a mentor for many younger actors as well. His presence was a force to be reckoned with by most accounts, and he was also izen-Times, by police. Their court date is November 18. On Wednesday, October 22 at noon Chancel- lor Bardo spoke to a crowd of more than 100 students, faculty and staff assembled on the lawn of A.K. Hinds University Center about the inappropriate behavior and poor judgment of the seven students involved in the incident. This was a very inappropriate action taken by seven members of the university community. I dont know, and we may never know, what their real motives were. I cannot look into their hearts. Regardless of their motivation, the students should have been able to understand the conse- quences of their actions for themselves as_ individuals, for their families and for this university community, he continued, Unequivocally, what they did was wrong. Regardless of motivation, it was wrong, Bardo said. What also is very real is | that seven members of this university community did something that was wrong. 9000 members of this uni- versity community did not do that. We are not going to allow seven people to define who you are. You are better than that. You are Western Carolina University. Bardo reminded the crowd that the university has a code of conduct and a creed oenteredion. core valugs.ot respect for others, and the desire and ability to debate and discuss differences in a civil and meaningful way. He was an enemy of President ITS READING DAY. YOU HAVE No EXCUSE! A COLUMN FOR THE MUSICALLY OBSESSED: FALL IN FULL SWING By Alison Murphy Staff Writer Fall is in full swing now, and that means this is the best time to see live mu- sic locally. This time of year Asheville is always bustling with a tremendous amount of musical activity. Every weekend, and even most weeknights there is a wide variety of decently priced shows to attend. My goal in these upcoming weeks is to see as much good music as possible and then bring it back to you! Sometimes it is hard to choose, but I will try to see any band that I think will put on a good show. I will not limit myself to cer- tain genres, because I believe that we can learn from any Paul Newman: In Memoriam Richard Nixon and a champion of gay rights and other hot button is- Sues) and lets not forget about Newmans own food product line. In short Paul Newman is the kind of man who was too big for this world and yet he found a way t (0) live good musician, no matter the style. This past week was the first of many exciting weeks to come. To start out my fall break I traveled to the Or- ange Peel on Wednesday October 8 to see the psyche- delic antics of Of Montreal. I havent seen the Orange Peel eryo dressed saw guys in wedding dresses and skirts, and girls in ani- mal print and neon. Of Mon- treal performed fantastically. They played a lot of songs from their Sunlandic Twins and Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer albums, in- cluding my favorite songs Oslo in the Summertime, inside of it and make it better. However I cant help but feel that I have missed something by not really caring that much about New- mans career up until just now after his death- the man was a legend after all. When I watched the mov- ie Cars for the first time the first thing I noticed is how much I enjoyed listen- ing to Newman talk as Doc, the old broken down racecar who never got to finish his last race. After watching the movie I remember thinking to myself that Newmans voice could have very well been the voice of God. It was powerful but not overwhelm- ing, soft spoken but never afraid to get gruff when it had to Most of all it was hyp- notic, like listening to some- one read a bedtime story to their grandchild. Its easy to see where people are coming from when people talk about the Christ-like symbolism of Cool Hand Luke because in reality Paul Newman was a Christ like figure: a man who could bring people together in more than one way, and make them see the good in others. He is an man and an actor that will truly be missed. to impress at Of Montreal, ae and Lets Pretend We Dont Exist. Their music is full of sexually suggestive lyrics that would be inappropriate coming from anyone other than Of Montreal and Snoop Dogg. | particularly enjoyed their keyboardist. She was steady and colorful with her chords and her solos are al- ways tasteful and exciting. I had a large, orange papier mache monster with humon- gous arms running around on stage with fairies. Of Mon- treals lead guitar player was wearing a centaur costume. Needless to say, the crowd loved it, and danced til the last note dropped. The following Wednesday, October 15, was one of the most anticipated shows of this fall: Boombox at Stella Blue. Their name says it all. This funky duo from Alabama takes elements from retro disco music, funk, jam and electronica to form a style all their own. Zion Godchaux on vocals and guitar and Russ Randolph, Captain of the decks, are so impressive live because between the two of them they produce quite a lot of music. Wednesday night was chalk full of sick beats, funky gui- tar licks and erotic vocals. Stella Blue was a great place to have this band perform because of its intimate set- ting, sweet sound system and fantastic lights. But, beware, Stella Blue is usually 21+. Boombox did start a little too late for a Wednesday night (11 oclock) and they ended up playing past 2 a.m. The crowd that night was one of the best Ive seen. Everyone was attentive, looking good and dancing funky. Overall, this was a killer show, and in the words of one fan the best Boombox show, ever! I had the pleasure of being invited to the Ga- rage at Biltmore on Friday to see two fresh bands from the Asheville area play. I was thoroughly impressed by both bands for their new ideas, or- ganization and sound quality. The first band was the Agobi Project with Andrew Kirk on At one point in the show they Guitar, David Krantz on keys and Nick Wankel on drums. These guys played a great set, which I caught half of. They had a really nice, chill vibe to them, and I look for- ward to hearing a lot more from them as they grow. The Agobi Project will be play- ing the official Bassnectar after-party on Halloween at or Sci-Fi at the ounge on Nov. 14. The closing band for the night, Funk Sway, absolutely blew me away. I had no ex- pectations for this band, had heard nothing about them, so they were definitely a pleas- ant surprise. Funk Sway filled up the entire stage with their two-lead vocalists, gui- tar, bass, drums, keys, dj and three back-up vocalists. All of their songs were well crafted and performed. The two front guys mostly rapped, but sang as well and their lyrics were positive, uplifting and clever. Inspirational hip-hop is how I would describe it. The three back-up singers had lovely voices that added some char- acter and color to the group. The rhythm section was ob- viously well rehearsed and quite knowledgeable in jazz, funk and fusion. Funk Sway was everything a band should be: tight, together, tasteful, tehearsed and inspirational. As the show came to a close, slowly band members be- gan to exit the stage and the rhythm section closed out the night with a groovin jam session. The Garage at Bilt- more is a small venue that fits about 300 people, they serve reasonably priced good beer, and there is an amazing amount of art on the walls to look at. It is a small venue, so they dont have high quality lights and there were a few sound problems throughout the night, but nothing major, If you have not been to the Garage at Biltmore, I highly recommend you go. I hope that I can in- Spire some of you to get out of our small town and go see live music. There is a lot go- ing on in our area that most people dont know about. So, be sure to check out our up- coming music calendar, and go have fun!
