  • Check it out! Western Carolinian REVIEWS in the Old Canadian Indie-Fu- turists Transcend to a New Maturity. By Jason W. Eckard Staff Writer Tokyo Police Club is a band with Elephant Shell, they started out with their first EP A Lesson in Crime (Paper Bag Records) that was, in essence, the bleak-beautiful-cynical image of Blade Runner packed into a 16-minute recording. From origami to unicorns, it is a very innocent look at a very bleak existence. And might I note that the word nnocent is found on these ears alone. Dave Monks voice could very well be Logan 3 as he hides from his impend- ing doom. But the bottom line is the beauty of it. I make all of these remarks about A Lesson of Crime in the most heartfelt of ways. Its simply a matter of the upbeat bass-synth sway that pop- ulates their earlier recordings. Following in ALOCs footsteps, Tokyo Police Club Elephant based out of Ontario; Canada.'Though the band delivered?to expectant fans Come to Student Media Spring Open House on April 24 3-5PM Student Union. Meet Students From: Catamount Communications, Gadfly, Nomad, the Western Carolinian, TV62 and WCAT Cable Radio! if its one thing that their latest album Elephant Shell (Saddle Creek) con- tains is beauty. The album reflects an attitude of time spent with ones own issues. The feeling of a well-traveled group of individuals speaks through quite well. Elephant Shell takes these ideas and puts them in a new and more developed light; simply, one of matu- rity. ing Adventures Of, a churchy number with handbells. Or Nursery Academy, a very tongue-in-cheek number about a pesky someone who just wont leave you alone. Elephant Shell shares one striking characteristic with another career-launching album. U.K.-based Bloc Partys 2005 debut Silent Alarm (Vice) contains similar sonic character- istics, but more importantly, Elephant Shell is a striking debut that will take Tokyo Police Club to places they cant even imagine. Heres your perfect setting for listening to Elephant Shell: Get the album and hop a train ride to wherever. Sit by the window and indulge. You have your homework as- signment. I hope you enjoy. < Takefor instance, The Harrow- Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Sam Miller has a blog! George Clooney returns to the director (and actor) seat with Leatherheads, a_ straightforward homage to the smarmy 20s cul- ture and to the rise of professional football. Leatherheads stars Cloo- ney as Jimmy "Dodge" Connolly, a guy who leads the Duluth Bull- dogs, a rag-tag professional foot- ball team trying to make it big in a sport that was the nations most popular sport. When Connolly is | able to snag leading college player did WW? vteHin Cxrtef Rither- ford (John Krasinski) he has in his hands a chance to take his team to the next level with his star power. At the same time Lexie Littleton (Rene Zellweger) plays a news- paper reporter hot on the case that Rutherford might be hiding some- thing about his service record. Thats literally the plot of Leatherheads. Simple and straightforward, because honestly thats all it needs to be. The real purpose of Leatherheads is to be just a comedy, something fun to shoot. Taking a look at George Clooneys previous works- Syri- ana, Michael Clayton and Good Night and Good Luck, his previously directed movie about Edward R. Murrow and his fight against the Red Scare and McCa- rthyism, Clooney deserves a co- medic break. Something where he can jump in the mud (check), steal police uniforms and try to con sui- cidal men into jumping out of win- dows (check) and get in bar fights (check). And with this angle in mind, it is the screen time between Clooney and Zellweger that really makes the movie. They both un- derstand exactly what they came here for, catchy romantic dialogue. And that is what they deliver. Leatherheads is quite a departure from Clooneys other .~ films and its very fun to see him in a different light. It is a good mov- ie if you understand what youre looking ata simple and witty comedy.
